President Arilla called the meeting to order right on time. She thanked everyone who "worked" at the various jobs to make each week a success. Gary Saks took over as our photographer in James Kaspar's absence. There were a few items from "The Family of Rotary" to report. Jim Sommer talked to Carl Hoffman last week and said he is doing just fine. He would like to come to some of our meetings and would enjoy a visit or call. Ed Knight just had surgery for an enlarged breast but thankfully there was no cancer found. The sadest news came when Arilla announced that our past president, Roy Houtz, lost his wife to cancer. They were a such a big part of this community and of our club. Marty's obituary was in the RB News Journal that came out Oct. 15th. If you'd like to send Roy a card, his address is: 1579 Spyglass Hill, Draper, UT. 84020. His email is houdra2@comcast.net and his phone number is 801-523-8386.
Joe Max entertained us with a very funny joke that he made up! Keep those good ones coming Joe!
Dictionaries have been ordered so we'll soon be having our annual Dictionary project at Arilla's. She'll keep us informed.
Don Lisio announced that we are joining the Adopt a Family fund raiser to provide Holiday gifts for one or two needy families in Poway. This has become an annual event and we should be proud that our club donated over $1,000 last year. Don is collection donations at the next 2 meetings. You can either bring cash or a check then, or mail in your contribution if you might miss those meetings. Any monies arriving after the deadline of Nov. 3rd will be returned. Don's address is 13024 Polvera Ave., San Diego, CA 92128.Frances announced that the Marine Corp Birthday Ball is on Nov. 6th this year. They are celebrating their 240th year. If you'd like to attend or need further information, you can call Frances.
The annual Rancho Bernardo Community Foundation Thanksgiving Luncheon is Tues., Nov. 24 at the RB Inn Aragon Ballroom. It is almost always a sell out and is a wonderful event. A full turkey dinner is served, complete with pumpkin pie and the Foundation gives out over $50,000.00 to charitable organizations in this area. Tickets are $50 and can be given to Dave Brooks. Rotary tries to reserve 2 tables of 10 each.
Benita announced that Arilla was in the last graduating class of the Rotary Leadership and Development class and a graduate of the first Rotary Institute class. She's our go to person now!!
Arilla noted that there are still several red badges in the room and encouraged the Mentors to help our new members earn their gold badge. Then Arilla called up our Fine Master, John O'Neill to "bring in the green stuff". Several people had Happy Bucks and Karen S. bought the green planter at the raffle.
We had a new experience with our speakers today. Shirley Napierala set up 4 club members that had been around for a long time so they could share their life experiences, much like a Who Am I. They were Lou Anna Dickerson, Charley Crew, Kathleen Smith and Paul Donick.
It was amazing how they all had backgrounds that none of us knew about. It was so interesting to here what these 4 wonderful people did before coming to our club. I heard nothing but positive accolades and I'm sure we'll do this again.
Next week is our Club Assembly. Be sure to come and find our more about the workings of our club.
