Meeting Minutes October 1, 2015

President Arilla brought the meeting to order and the Pledge of Allegiance was let by masterful club photographer James Kaspar.  Past-President Jim Wise inspired us with a review of Rotary history including some background of the 4 Way Test.

Our greeter today was Past-President Shirley Napierala and she introduced one visiting Rotarian, Glen Googins of the Chula Vista club and Sonny’s son.  Also visiting were Sonny’s husband Bob, the speaker’s father Jim Firoillo and Rosemarie Bergdahl of the Gateway in Poway.

President Arilla thanked our volunteers:  Frances Blair and Joel Doss at check-in, room setup by Vern Cook and Paul Donick, photography by James Kaspar, Past-President Bill Angus for doing the newsletter and these words by your humble scribe, Past-President Dave Brooks.

Past-President Mira provided the Family of Rotary report.  She said Jim Edwards was coming home and doing much better.  Sherry Collins’ cancer is in remission and she is living actively.  President Arilla traded in her big cast for a much smaller extremely stylish one.  Past-President Don Glover had surgery on his knee which was damaged over a year ago when he took his duck suit way too seriously and went for a dip in the BHCC fountain.  The person who put him there shall remain nameless (hint: he is currently Lt. Governor of D5340).

Bob Barr is our Peace Chair and he attended the Peace Leadership Seminar last weekend with President-elect Benita Page.   Sponsored by the District 5340 Pathways to Peace Committee, this seminar covered Rotary's peace initiatives and how Rotary is working to become an ever-greater force for peace at home and throughout the world.  Bob mentioned two upcoming events; the first is the Rotary World Peace Conference which will be held in Ontario on January 15 and 16, 2016.  This is a lead-in to the International Assembly which will be held in San Diego the following week.   This conference will have 6 plenary sessions, 104 breakout sessions and 13 tracks for attendees.  The second event is the Model UN; he is looking for club members to be mentors for the RB High students who participate in this program.

President Arilla reminded us that there is still time to sign up for the Millions for Hope Gala on October 17.  The keynote speaker will be RI President Ravi Ravindran.  The club is subsidizing $50 of the cost for each member, reducing the cost to $35.  Sign up on the D5340 website and when prompted to pay, don’t use a credit card, say that you’ll pay by check.  Write the club a check for $35 (spouses are $85) and the club will bring a check to the Gala for the balance.

Arilla also thanked Madelyn for hosting a great TGIX last weekend and reminded us that the October TGIX would be the dictionary labeling party at her house.

Past president John O’Neill did his usual fine job as Finemaster and extracted a goodly amount from the generous crowd.  New Q2 speaker chair Sonny Googins introduced SD Police Officer A. J. Fiorillo, who spoke to us on a wide range of issues relating to policing today.
