Rotary Meeting July 9, 2015
Meeting Notes

The first meeting of President Arilla St. Laurent got off to a great start, with capacity attendees!  This was an evening meeting and our new Pres had her own cheering section and supporters – numerous friends who came to cheer her on, including the “First Dude” also known as Arilla’s husband, Chuck.

Jennifer Garey was our greeter and she had the pleasure of introducing at least 17 guests.  There may have been more, but this scribe apologizes because she lost count!  Lynn Ross led us in the Pledge of Allegiance and Joel Doss gave the inspirational thought “Lessons from a Butterfly”.

President Arilla thanked tonight’s volunteers:  Frances Blair and Joel Doss at the Front Desk, James Kaspar, photographer; the set-up crew- Vern Cook and Bill Bonner and Scribe, Sandie Dewane.

Mira Bozanich gave the Family of Rotary report.  Steve LaPointe is recovering from     kidney cancer surgery and a card is being sent around to wish him well.  Lew Tyler is now in Bend, Oregon near his daughter and is about to undergo more chemotherapy.

President Arilla called immediate Past President Don Glover to the podium where she hoped to present the “Light Up Rotary” candle to him, but discovered that it was missing. Don, it’s the thought that counts!  She also talked about the on-going fundraiser for the Ronald McDonald House – saving pop tabs.  Last year between $12,000-$15,000 was raised.  She encouraged us to bring our pop tabs to our weekly meetings.

Mike Fuqua announced that the “Dirty Dozen” will be meeting next Thursday to discuss project ideas to be done in the Rancho Bernardo area.

President Arilla then called our wonderfully handsome and nice guy, Fine Master John O’Neill to the podium – amongst cheers and jeers.  John said he was a bit disappointed in all the jubilation.  Since John was waiting for an entire year to do this, he immediately fined past President Don Glover $40 for avoiding fines during his tenure.  He then proceeded to collect lots of Happy Bucks and there were lots of them.  Thanks to everyone who contributed!

Bob Vaughn introduced our speaker:  Kathy Peroni, Government Affairs Manager for the Public Utilities Department of the City of San Diego, who spoke on Pure Water.  Kathy gave an excellent presentation pertaining to San Diego’s water conservation programs.  A lively interactive question and answer period took place after her speech.

Congratulations, President Arilla, on a successful start to our club’s New Year!
