Celebrating the 50th Anniversary of Rancho Bernardo Rotary
President Don called the meeting to order and Jim Sommer led us in the Pledge of Allegiance, reflecting on the strength brought to us by diversity in our country, which he also saw in abundance during his recent visit to Monterey Ridge Elementary School to deliver dictionaries. Gayla Williams delivered the inspirational thought for the day. Greeter Benita Page introduced our guests who included visiting Rotarian Bill Mortimer, Mike Fuqua and Sonny Googins. Don thanked our helpers for the day: setup by Vern Cook, Bill Bonner and Paul Donick, check-in by Secretary Jeanne Hawkins, Francis Blair and Kathleen Smith, music by John Hawkins, photographer James Kaspar and scribing of these very words by Dave Brooks.
There was nothing to report about our Family of Rotary because we are all healthy! Finemaster John O’Neill is back for good and we can’t talk about him anymore. Don skipped his Senior Moment and instead shared a Rotary Moment regarding the excellent time he had in Australia with the Recreational Vehicle Fellowship of Rotarians. There are many other fellowships that you can join with other Rotarians who share your interests.Dave reported that the 50th Anniversary was enjoyed by over 100 members, spouses and guests. We got proclamations from Councilman Mark Kersey, Assemblyman Brian Maienschein and Congressman Scott Peters. 18 past-presidents were in attendance including Ann Calvert who came from Oregon, and we had front page coverage in the RB News Journal. President Don gave each of the committee members a bottle of wine to thank us for our efforts.
Don Lisio announced that 34 members donated over $1200 to the Adopt-a-Family program. President-elect Arilla St. Laurent discussed the Dictionary/Thesaurus program, saying that the school distributions were nearly complete this year and reminding us that the first recipients of dictionaries 11 years ago are now in college!Ballots were passed out to all club members by Past President Gary Saks. The following club officers were unanimously approved for the 2015-16 Rotary year:
President – Arilla St. Laurent
President-elect – Benita Page
Vice President – Mira Bozanich
Secretary – Jeanne Hawkins
Treasurer – Troy Daum
Past President – Don Glover
The treasurer’s report will be presented by Rick Bramble in January, 2015.
Club foundation president Benita presented a check for $2000 to Joan Wiley of 9 Girls Ask, which supports women with ovarian cancer. She also reported that 75% of the club’s members have made their annual donation to The Rotary Foundation.Maguy Feghali did her “Who Am I” and got her gold badge.
Dave introduced our speaker David Akin of the City of San Diego’s Public Utilities Department. David is a customer advocate and helps correct billing errors. He also discussed the city’s response to the drought and the new Pure Water system, which will reclaim waste water.
