Rancho Bernardo Rotary Meeting Minutes
May 11, 2017

President Benita was traveling this week so Vern Cook was asked to lead the meeting. It was our evening meeting and we had a huge turnout with lots of guests. Ron Hunt led the pledge and Toby gave an Inspirational Message to be positive to extend your life.

John Goodrich was the greeter, Front Desk was manned by Joel Doss and Sonny Googins, set up was done by Dan Malloy and Doug and James Kaspar was on the job as our photographer.

Toby is looking for volunteers to work a booth at RB Alive on June 4th from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in two hour increments. They close most of Bernardo Center Dr. in front of the car wash area. There are food booths and lots of goods and services to take advantage. It's a fun day! Our booth will have a Shelter Box set up for people to see what they consist of and how Rotary helps victims of disasters with this temporary setup. Hope to see lots of you sign up, come out and enjoy the day.

Vern brought us yet another project that needs volunteers. It's called House to Home. They are collecting furniture and other various items. He will follow with a detailed email with more information. Our club also gave a check to MusiCamp to help with their expenses. Fliers were left on the table asking us to support this wonderful venue with a donation of $50 per person (or more) which will be used for rehearsal transportation, meals, sheet music and student recreation activities. Please contact Dan Malloy for questions and further details. Your donation will give you entry to the Concerts on Sun., July 23rd and Sat., July 29th. Students from all over the world will join the SD Youth Symphony for a series of classical music performances.

Karen (Family of Rotary) reported on the following members:
Bibi Flaherty : Broke her hip and is resting comfortably in a rehad center near Costco. As soon as she is strong enough, she will undergo heart surgery to repair her aorta.
April Saunders had surgery on May 10th and will remain in the hospital for a few days and then recover at home for about a month.
Judy Lutticken had surgery on her wrist and has a small "cast" right now. She hopes to be back at Rotary this coming week.
Pat Kenney is doing well. It is getting harder for her to get around as she is wheel chair bound, but she is being cared for by her son who lives with her and a constant companion who helps out with all of her needs. She actually made it to church Sat. eve.!

Don Glover presented a nice check to Lynn Ross to be used for the Miss RB Pageant Lynn asked that you contact her if you would like the girls to appear at any other events. They love to show up and help work if necessary. They were a wonderful asset on Rotarians at Work Day with our project. We painted the inside hallways of The Child Development Center at Miramar Marine Corps Air Station!

Our program tonight was Jeff Edmons, Director of the SD Youth Symphony and two of his top students to play Bach for us. He said "Music is a common language with the students bonding through friendship and music." Ron and Dan were very pleased to present a check to Mr. Edmons in the amount of $5000 to help cover many of the camps activities. We had an added bonus when Vern asked the two students to stay and perform a duet. Both musicians played the violin and they were more than wonderful. Ilana Herschfeld and Christian Gonzales are both members of the San Diego Youth Symphony and our own International Youth Symphony Orchestra.

The short break between performances allowed time for John to do some pretty serious fining to build up our coffers! Doug Dawson has tickets for a performance by the RB Corrale on June 9th. Call him directly if you are interested.

Our next two meetings, May 18th and 25th will be moved to the Pavillion (outside where we used to register for our golf tournaments). Our regular room is being used for Country Club events. I would suggest bringing a jacket just in case it's a little cold and/or breezy.
Respectfully submitted,
