RB Rotary Meeting Notes – May 10, 2018
By Sandie Dewane

This evening’s meeting took place at the Country Club of Rancho Bernardo where just about everyone present was wearing some shade of pink!   President Mike called the meeting to order and we recited the Rotary motto.  Prior to leading us in the Pledge of Allegiance,  Gary Saks read a poem that he wrote in support of the “Pink Revolution” whose male members are protesting fines levied against them for wearing pink to a meeting.  Even the slide show had hues of pink – the flag’s stripes and a photo of the Finemaster himself, sporting a hot pink shirt!  Who knew John could look so good in pink?
Patrick Chafee gave the inspirational message and Greeter John Goodrich welcomed 2 visiting Rotarians and 8 guests.  President Mike thanked the following volunteers:  Front Desk- Joel Doss, Frances Blair and Mira Bozanich; Set-up crew – Judy Lutticken and Jim Reid; Photographer – James Kaspar; Pianist – John Hawkins and Scribe – Sandie Dewane.
Announcements:  President Mike reminded us that the June 7th noon meeting will be held at the Country Club of Rancho Bernardo.  All other club meetings will be at Bernardo Heights Country Club.  The Governor’s Dinner is scheduled for June 4th at the San Diego La Jolla Marriott.  All “red badgers” can attend at half-price.
Michael Rennie, visiting from the RB Sunrise Rotary, announced that the 7th annual “Taste of our Towne” event is scheduled for June 16th at the Poway Performing Arts Center.  There will be lots of food, beverages and music.  Tickets are $100.
The ever-chic Frances Blair announced that the Underwear and Sock drive is underway for the Stand Down and encouraged us to donate new items for our veterans.  If it’s not convenient to shop, just give Frances the money and she’ll do the shopping for you!  End date for the drive is June 7th.  Frances then segued into her interesting and humorous “Who Am I”.
Dan Barrios had the pleasure of making a Paul Harris Fellow presentation to Jo Casterline.  Jo’s husband, Paul, was a member of our club for many years. Congratulations and thank you, Jo!   Arilla St. Laurent reported that RZ Norris is doing well and going back home.  She is looking forward to returning to our meetings.
Next up was our beloved Finemaster John O’Neill who arose from his throne - I mean chair- and exclaimed “Fake News” as he gazed at the pink-clad photo of him showing on the screen.  Jim Hyldahl, a vision in hot pink, stood up and reminded John that he is chipping away at the male member clothing choices – NO sandals, NO shorts and now NO pink.  Speaking on behalf of the Pink Revolution, he and other males want to have the freedom to wear pink at a meeting without getting fined.  At that point, a lively discussion took place, with verbal votes yay and nay.  It didn’t seem to sway John as he commented that it sounded like 50-50 vote to him and besides, this is not a democracy!  At that point Bob Vaughn reminded everyone about all the money John rakes for Rotary because of his aversion to men wearing pink.
President Mike introduced tonight’s speaker – our very own James Kaspar who talked about his 49- year history with Photography.  It was a wonderful presentation with awe-inspiring photos!  Thank you, James!
Upcoming programs are Janis Kurth, Young Single Mothers Foundation on May 17th and Gary Saks, Scholarship Presentations on May 24th.

President Mike ended the meeting with a quote by Miley Cyrus:  “PINK isn’t just a color, it’s an attitude!”

Respectfully submitted,
