President Benita called the evening meeting to order at Stoneridge Country Club with John Goodrich leading us in the Pledge of Allegiance, followed by a humorous inspiration by Doug Dawson who introduced all of us to the term 'sen-agers' (seen-agers) after John Goodrich told a joke where after a husband directed his wife to a computer manual, she directed him to the cupboard to her set of cookbooks! President Benita did the honors of conducting introductions of guests for the evening. Joel Doss led us in a hearty Welcome Song. President Benita thanked the evening's volunteers: Front Desk, Joel Doss and Karen Stelman, Set Up Crew, Judy Lutticken and Paul Donick, Photographer James Kaspar and Scribe,Sonny Googins.
Announcements included reminders of the District Training Assembly, March 18, the District Conference, May 20 and the discount from the club of $25 for early registration. Jim Hyldahl gave us a spirited pep talk on where we should be on June 10-14, The Atlanta Convention, a gathering expected to number around 30,000 Rotarians from all over the world! Be there! Our winner of the 4 Way Speech Contest will compete in the Regionals at the Sunrise Club at The Country Club of Rancho Bernardo on March 21st. Family of Rotary report was given by Karen Stelman which included that John O'Neill is doing well as is Brian Flaherty. Kendra Jeffcoat's Memorial Service will take place at 10 a.m. on April 1 at the Rancho Bernardo Presbyterian Church.
Karen also made an RB Foundation presentation to Pat Armstrong, supporting a matching grant sponsored by Bob and Joan Barr . It was to support the AAUW (American Association of University Women) sponsored youth camp and field trips of "Tech Trek" a weekend camp featuring and encouraging studying the sciences and experimentation. A brief video was shown to enhance our knowledge of the program.Rick Bramble, substitute Fine Master, had a wonderful time fining anyone who traveled, bought a car, appeared in the news-and-hadn't been fined in the past month! That just about covered three quarters of the club. Multi-reason Happy Bucks added to our coffers. Rick left the podium a smiling man.
Bob Vaughn sent us all an email earlier that beautifully summarized the program for this meeting. He introduced Kathleen Dang who informed us of the history of Chinese immigrants who came to California around the Gold Rush Days. 'The Asian Pacific Islander Americans ' played a significant role in the development of early San Diego, especially in what is now known The Gaslamp District, and Old Town in the mid 1800s. They later built the railroads from Utah to Sacramento. Karen, the Director of the Museum of Chinese History spoke eloquently, with humor and without a note- to tell us this history. Jim Hyldahl had a most appropriate book for our guest to sign: "Building A Museum."Concluding reminders of upcoming programs: March 16-San Diego Airport Authority, Angie Jamison; March 23-Interfaith, Chelsea Buck; and March 30-Feeding San Diego, Christine Cole.
President Benita adjourned the meeting at 6:30 p.m. with an appropriate quote, " The Chinese use two brush strokes to the word 'crisis.' One brush stroke stands for 'danger.' The other for 'opportunity'. In a crisis, be aware of the danger --but recognize the opportunity." John F. KennedyScribe, Sonny Googins
