Rotary Meeting Notes by Sandie Dewane, Scribe
July 27, 2017

President Mike Fuqua called the meeting to order. Kathleen Smith led us in the Pledge. In Lynn Ross’s absence, President Mike gave the Inspirational message. Greeter Dick Norfolk welcomed two guests and Gary Saks led us in singing the Welcome Song, after briefly explaining the melody’s 150 year old history.
President Mike thanked the following volunteers: Joel Doss and Kathleen Smith, Front Desk; Paul Donick and Judy Lutticken, Set up Crew; Photographer James Kaspar; and Sandie Dewane, Scribe.
Susan King, filling in for Benita Page, reminded us that August 10th is the deadline for donating school supplies and/or cash in support of the Salvation Army’s Backpack program. 500 pre-qualified children will be attending the School Fair in Escondido to pick up their needed school supplies. Please bring items to our Rotary meetings.

Tesha Young told us about the Boys & Girls Club “Stuff our Bus” event. NBC has partnered with them and will be broadcasting live on Friday morning from their Clairemont office. It was suggested that Tesha wear a bright Rotary Club shirt in case she appears on TV.
President Mike announced that Jim Wise has been named an Honorary Member. Jim was in our club for over 30 years and recently retired. Mike also announced that on August 28th there is a fundraising event for Honorary Mayor candidate Alex Lawn, who is in friendly competition with a member from the RB Sunrise Rotary.
John Goodrich told us about the Rotary Foundation Seminar on September 23rd, which is going to be held in North County this year. Attendees will have an opportunity to hear where our donations go. There will also be videos and entertainment. Cost is $25 and includes breakfast.

Charley Crew gave an overview of the Youth Protection Policy. There has been a change in that everyone already certified (68% of our Club) will need to re-apply in September. The cost is $12.95 to cover cost of background check. There is also a required on-line training. If you have questions, contact Charley at 858-210-2266.

Arilla St. Laurent gave the Family of Rotary report. She mentioned that Jim Wise is recovering from back surgery. Bibi Flaherty was in ICU for 8 days. Cards were passed around for Bibi and Pat Kenney.

Arilla, filling in for John O’Neill, put on her Fine Master’s hat and proceeded to fine Scott Lawn and Don Glover for having their pictures in the paper. Next in line were Bob Vaughn, Joe Max and a cooperative guest for having pink in their shirts. Happy Bucks were given by Vern Cook in honor of Youth Orchestra, Don Glover on behalf of his daughter, Joel Doss because of his sister’s visit and Arilla in celebration of her 20th anniversary in Rotary. Sorry if your humble scribe omitted anyone.

President Mike told us about one of the things he learned at PET's training was to have a “Plan B” in the event things don’t go as planned. It came in handy today as the scheduled speaker had to cancel at last minute. In her place, we were fortunate to watch a video of Andrew Young’s speech given at the Rotary Convention in Atlanta. It was awesome!

Mike reminded us that the August 24th meeting will be outside in the Pavilion. It will be casual – shorts are okay except for Paul Donick as he doesn’t want to be a distraction for the females in attendance.
The August 3rd program will be Victoria Cavalier, Tender Loving Canines.
Respectfully submitted,
