July 14, 2016

Our new president, Benita Page, called the meeting to order and introduced our new member, Toby Westbrook, who gave a very nice dissertation on the flag and then led us in the pledge.  Bob Vaughn gave an inspirational thought after first asking us to observe a moment of silence for the fallen victims in Nice, France who were senselessly killed on July 14th, attending a Bastille Day Celebration.

Arilla and Judy Lutticken shared the greeter responsibilities, introducing lots of guests that came to hear our speaker.  Doug Dawson led us in our welcome song and Benita thanked all of our volunteers for the day.

Under the banner of Family of Rotary, Benita read a lovely letter written by Carl Hoffmans family, thanking us for flowers we sent to his funeral and for being such a big part of Carl's later years.  She also read a brief summary of Carl's admirable past, both in  the military and with his love for music.  He had his own band and played semi-professionally for many years.  He was a leader in our community and in our hearts.  He will be missed.

Arilla will be our Gold Badge Coordinator this year and her first official job was to induct Gloria Renas into  our club as an Honorary Member.  Glorias' husband Bud was a member in good standing for many years until his passing.   Welcome to our club Gloria!

Please go to our District  Website to find out about our upcoming District Council meeting.  The speaker will be Shelley Zimmerman.
She was hired by the SD Police Department in 1982 and became our current Chief of Police in 2014.  Should be very interesting.

Upcoming events for our club include:

Stand Down - July 22.  Assignments and directions have been sent to each volunteer.  Don't forget to take your "Boarding Pass" with you.  We will be working at this event, helping our homeless vets clean up, get new clothes (including the underwear we donated), see a dentist and/or doctor and generally get pampered as a thank you for all they sacrificed for our country.

District Service Project - Volunteer at the Feeding America Food Bank and help hand out food.  Larry Saunders has more information.

Ronald McDonald House - Check with Larry S. to see if he needs more volunteers - August 9

Salvation Army - August 13.  School supplies will be collected to give to under privileged  children.  Please help support this cause by bringing in any items you think they might need to start their new school year.  You can also pack and/or  hand out back packs with school supplies inside on the 13th.  See Larry again!  (Busy boy)

If you'd like to attend any MusiCamp performances, contact Ron Hunt or Dan Malloy.

Our newest member, Rob Pringle, was inducted into our club today.  His sponsor is Arilla and his mentor will be Doug Dawson, a fairly new member himself.  Even though Rob was just inducted, he has already volunteered his time for several of our projects!  He's going to be a great asset to our club!

A special thanks to Doug Dawson for putting together a new brochure  hi lighting the many activities and good work our Rotary Club does, in the community and around the world.  He spotted the fact that our old brochure needed a face lift.  I believe Dave Brooks helped with this effort.

Benita discussed what new members learn from the checklist process.  The number one priority is to make friendships and impact our local community with our service projects.

Mike Fuqua is our Membership Chair.  Don Glover, Benita and Mike all attended a Membership Rally and "Veteran Rotarians" deemed this  as one of the best, most informative events they have ever attended!  Wish we had all attended.

Frances Blair is our Program Chair and she gave a brief over view of the quality of speakers we can expect to visit our club.  Vern Cook has the responsibility for the first quarter, Mira and Karen will oversee the 2nd quarter, Bob Vaughn will handle the 3rd quarter and Jim S. and Ron Hunt will chair the 4th quarter.  Contact any of them if you know of a good speaker we should invite.

Our speaker was Monika Hseu, a docent from The San Diego Museum of Art.  Her topic was "Quilts and Color".  Benita asked up to wear some colorful clothes to this meeting and so many people had run with their wardrobe.  Pink the the stand out as Benita said our fine master couldn't fine anyone in pink this particular night!  Ms. Hseu had many, many slides of the beautiful quilts on display that were "loaned" to our Museum by the Boston Museum.  The quilts all told a "story" relevant to the time frame and/or culture at the time they all hand  made.  Most of these quilts were made between 1840-1940.
Dan Malloy had the dubious honor of filling in for Jim Hydahl to find an appropriate book reflecting the speakers subject.  He nailed it, making him and excellent back up in the future.

Benita finished with a great Inspirational Quote:  " Good friends are like quilts-they age with you, yet never lose their warmth"!  Have a great week.
