Our new president, Mike Fuqua, officially called the meeting to order with the statement, "....celebrating 54 years of Service Above Self",  followed by the club reciting the Four Way Test motto in everything we think, do or say.

Dan Barrios led us in the flag salute, looking like a flag himself!  Bob Vaughn gave the Inspirational message and our newest member Susan King was our greeter.  She did a stellar job with a beautiful smile on her face!  Our other volunteers were Sonny helping Joel at the front desk, Paul, Doug and Vern did set up and James (ever faithful) Kaspar was behind the camera.  Jim Sommer led us in song and it was one of our best!  We actually sounded pretty good!!

Dan Barrios is our Rotary International rep and presented the first Paul Harris of the year, and his first PH to Mike Fuqua!

Arilla is our new Family of Rotary rep and she asked that if you have information on a club members health,  please let her know so she can follow up.

John O'Neill did a "Fine" job as our Fine Master and started our new year off with a "big haul" from generous and sometimes reluctant club members!  Glad to see he's back to entertain us.  Spread the word and the gossip.

Jim Sommer did the introduction of our very Prominent Speaker, Steve Vaus, Mayor of Poway.  It turns out Poway's Mayor has a very illustrious background prior to his current position.  He is a Grammy Award Winning recording artist, song writer, singer and created the theme music for the Americas Cup and the US  Navy Blue Angels.  He worked with many famous artists, recording their music for commercial distribution.  He is also instrumental in securing some very big names to perform at the CA Center for Arts in Escondido for their Holiday presentation of "Carols by Candelite" ."

As Mayor for the City of Poway, he promotes The Spirit of Volunteerism,  recognizes a Deputy of the Month, and raised $200,000 from residents of Poway to create a statue in Tony Gwynns' honor as he was a long time resident of Poway.  This amount far exceed the requested $150,000 due to Mayor Vaus' successful campaign and Tony's long standing support of the City of Poway.

Poway was voted #1 Safest City in San Diego County and 11th in the State of CA.  When Mayor Vaus first started in this job, he was involved in the Poway Road Corridor Study.   He and his Council members always put their own personal cell phone numbers on their contact information so they can be easily accessed if a resident has a concern or problem.  What a great leader and public speaker.   He was very well received.  Thanks to Jim Sommer for inviting him!

Upcoming Programs:

July 20 - Mirna Wasef, The Contemporary Middle East and changes that have led to today's conditions.
July 27 - Adrienne Holmes, Blue Apple

CORRECTION TO SOMETHING SAID AT THE MEETING:  Shirley Napierala was responsible for starting the books as speakers gifts.  They sure have brought a lot of smiles to every ones faces!!  Thanks, Shirley

President Mike finished with these great quotes:

"Do your little bit of good where you are.  It's those little bits of good put together that overwhelm the world."
- Desmond Tutu

"Rotarians are very much more favorably disposed toward action than they are toward words."  - Paul Harris

Yours in Rotary,
