RB Rotary Club Meeting 7/10/14Pres. Gary called our evening meeting to order after drinks and another wonderful buffet by Bernardo Heights.
Dave B. gave the pledge and Dan Malloy read in inspirational thought for the day. Bill B and Vern set up the room, Cathy Glover was our guest greeter and Frances and Rick worked the front desk. Thanks to all.
We had several guests, both spouses and potential new members. Our opening ceremony began with Gary giving Don Glover his new presidents pin and Don gave Gary his past presidents pin. Gary then read the oath of office to Don and passed the gavel to make it all official. Don called up his new board and gave them badges, read their oath, had them repeat it back, and they became officially inducted. Arilla received her president elect pin and all was well with in the Rotary world.
Don mentioned our new theme for the year..."Light up Rotary" and gave all Rotarians a pin. He went on to mention some of the high lights for the coming year, the biggest being our 50th anniversary. We officially had our first meeting Nov. 26th but our party will be Dec. 4, doubling as our holiday party. Fri. night, July 18th is the 10th anniversary of the Rotary Flag Court at Petco Park (spear headed by Past District Governor Mike Stelman) and everyone was encouraged to attend. July 26 will be a membership seminar from 8 to 12:30 and also a District Council meeting at the Center for Performing Arts in Esc. combined with Musicamp. Go to the Rotary website for more details.Lane Elliott, President and CEO of WeTubeU, was called up for a very special honor. She has done our publicity for this past year and "shadowed" our club to film and promote Rotary. She very kindly waived her fees after being so impressed with all the good work we do through Rotary to serve our community locally and around the world. For that, our Foundation President, Benita Page made her an Official Honorary Member of our club and she was presented with a Paul Harris Fellow. Congratulations Lane and welcome to Rotary!
Our newest Rotarian, John Kasser, was our guest speaker. He retired from UC Berkeley as their Athletic Director and had many interesting opportunities to work with ESPN, Game of the Week, Fox Sports and College Football on TV. He gave us some interesting insight into the NCAA and women's college athletics. There was a huge inequity shown between men and women's pay when they turned professional. He also touched on the fact that colleges are making millions of dollars off of every thing to do with promotions outside the schools such as ads, sales of logo items, etc. The coaches are being paid exorbitant salaries and the players are starting to realize the schools and coaches are reaping all the benefits and they are not. There is already a movement under way to look into the player/student being compensated in some way.Our program for next week will be Tender Loving Canines and the training of service dogs.
Charlie gave us a thought for the day and Don adjourned his first meeting as president. We look forward to another year of laughter, fund raising and helping others less fortunate.
