Rancho Bernardo Rotary Club Minutes, January 26, 2017

President Benita called the meeting to order at 12:30 at Stone Ridge CC. She began with a mini history notation that today celebrates Australia's National Day, when in 1788 a fleet of ships carried convicts from England to Australia. Karen Stelman led the pledge.  For inspiration, Jim Sommer noted that the recent Inauguration called to mind  the song God Bless America and its meaning to Americans. We joined in singing the song. Gary Saks, our Greeter, conducted introductions. Two visiting Rotarians were with us, Bill Cogan, a former member who has returned to the area and Sally Revner and others.  Gary Saks returned to lead us in our welcoming song. All were in good voice. President Benita thanked those who had meeting tasks: Front Desk, Joel Doss and Sonny Googins; Scribe, Sonny Googins; Set Up,  Judy Lutticken and Paul Donick; Photographer, James Kaspar.

President Benita's announcements included:   A TGIX is scheduled at Mira's home on Friday, February 17. Please rsvp to her if you are attending.  As a community project, she, Jim Hyldahl, Mike Fuqua, Vern Cook assembled Hygiene Kits for At Risk students. Benita promoted a District Training Assembly occurring March 18.

Troy Daum discussed the RYLA Youth Award weekend Camp happening April 8-11, Don Glover reminded us that we are ALL on the Membership Committee and urged us to promote new members.

Tesha invited us to attend the Boys and Girls Club celebration of its 75th Anniversary on Feb. 20th. if we can.  Established in 1941, this chapter is the oldest in California. Mike Fuqua asked for judges for the 4 Way Speech contest and reminded all of the Convention in Atlanta in June. Benita announced the results of the preferred meeting times: the majority opinions split evenly for having or not having evening meetings, with a few not caring either way.

Presentations: Jim Hyldahl invited Mike Fuqua, our President-elect, to receive a flag with next year's theme, "Making a Difference" which he received from our incoming International President. President Benita presented Stoneridge Dining Director with a monetary "thank you" for his special efforts for our club. Finally, it was noted that over 70 attended Jim Edwards Celebration of Life on January 24, 2017.

Bob Vaughn introduced our speaker, Kevin Karpe from the Federal Aviation Authority (FAA) in Mira Mar. Kevin described the role of traffic air controllers which is essentially controlling air traffic in their designated zones and preventing air collisions. Their challenge is safety in the "Highway in The Sky" at 51 airports. He made us familiar with the 'jargon' of their profession: TRACs, metroplex, star system, radar sites, etc. noting that there are 34,000 FAA controllers in the USA. A recent challenge is dealing with drones. Jim H. presented 'the library gift book'' for signing .

Program Reminders: February 2-Wendy Patrick from the DA's Office-start 12:20 P.M.
February 9- 4 Way Speech Contest.

President Benita's apt closing thought: "Both optimists and pessimists contribute to society. Optimists invent airplanes, pessimists, the parachute."

The meeting adjourned at 1:30 p.m.
