Jan 25th Rotary Meeting

Please join us at this week's meeting as we hear from Greg Anglea, Chief Executive Officer of Interfaith Community Services in Escondido.  Interfaith Community Services was founded in 1979 by a handful of diverse faith communities to address the needs of low-income, homeless and under-served people in North San Diego County.  Separately, these congregations were providing relief to people in need, but by creating Interfaith they were able to collaborate to make a bigger impact on the needs of the people in our community.  Today, hundreds of congregations have joined their ranks to make up Interfaith's incredible membership network. Through this membership, Interfaith is built on an incredible grassroots network of support in every corner of the North San Diego County Community.

I would also like to remind you about the "Hats Off to Volunteers"  program that I mentioned on Thursday.  If you have someone you'd like to nominate for this honor please let me know this week.  Thanks.

YIRS,

Mike
President, Rotary Club of Rancho Bernardo

Rotary Meeting Notes for January 18, 2018
By Sandie Dewane
President Mike Fuqua called the meeting of the Rotary Club of RB, celebrating 54 years of service above self, to order.  He welcomed everyone and together we recited our motto.  Brian Flaherty led us in the Pledge of Allegiance after noting that many of the country music artists perform songs honoring the flag.  He “volunteered” Jim Sommer to bring his guitar someday and sing some of those songs for the Club and President Mike readily agreed!
Jim Hyldahl gave the inspirational message utilizing some of the quotes from Martin Luther King, Jr.  One of which is:  “Time is always right to do what is right.”  At this point, the microphone stopped working and fortunately for us, Troy Daum was today’s greeter and he never needs a mic to be heard.  We had one visiting Rotarian and seven guests who were serenaded with our Welcome Song.
President Mike thanked today’s volunteers:  Scribe – Sandie Dewane; Front Desk – RZ Norris, Joel Doss and John Kasser; Set Up Crew – Paul Donick and Judy Lutticken; Photographer – James Kaspar and Pianist – John Hawkins.
Mike thanked the volunteers who attended the Dictionary Labeling Party at the home of Toby & Ann Westbrook.  Cathy Glover reported that when she and Don delivered the dictionaries to a school, seven of the books did not have a label in them.  She asked everyone to check each dictionary prior to delivery.  She has extra labels if anyone needs them.  Mira Bozanich mentioned that she needs two volunteers to deliver books to Westwood Elementary.  Cathy announced that the Sees Valentine candy orders must be received by January 27th.
Other announcements:  President Mike read a letter of appreciation the Club received from one of the Adopt a Family recipients.  Board elections will take place in the next week or two.  “Hats Off to Volunteers” event will take place on April 14th.  If the members wish to nominate anyone, they should email their choice to Mike.  The Carlsbad Rotary Club is holding a Rockin’ Rotary North County Social on January 27th from 6-9 p.m. in Carlsbad.
Doug Dawson gave an update on our goal of planting one tree for each club member this year.  We are following the 14 trees donated to Abraxas with 60 trees to be planted in the San Dieguito River Park.  Doug has been coordinating this with a Lake Hodges Ranger and the planting will take place on January 27th.  The ranger has recruited volunteers who will dig the holes and do the actual planting – yay!  Doug requested that if anyone has contacts, it would be great to invite local officials, newspapers, etc.  The ceremony will take place at 11:00 a.m. at Sikes Adobe, Escondido.  He will be sending a detailed email to the Club members regarding set-up and other needs.
A representative from North County San Diego Veterans Stand Down was in attendance today and she announced that the four-day event is scheduled for January 25-28 at Green Oak Ranch in Escondido.
Prior to presenting a Foundation grant, John Kasser explained that club members can make a donation to a non-profit organization of their choice and if approved by the Board, the Club will make a matching gift up to $1,000.  John was delighted to present a check in the amount of $2,500 to Vista Hill Foundation.  Barb & Charley Crew and John & Deborah Goodrich made the initial donation.  Rachel from Vista Hill was most gracious in accepting the check and thanked our Club for its continuing support.  She also thanked Phil Warner, Gary Saks and others for making deliveries to their Food Bank.  She reminded us that the annual Fashion Show is scheduled for April 20th.
Foundation Chair Dan Barrios had the pleasure of presenting a 7th Level Ruby Paul Harris Fellow award to James Kaspar.  Congratulations, James!
Next up was the ever-versatile Arilla St. Laurent who auctioned off a plant arrangement.  Bill Brehm was the highest bidder.  Finemaster John O’Neill was in a rare mellow mood today and only asked for Happy Bucks.  Thanks to Dan Malloy, Dan Barrios, Troy Daum, Mike Fuqua and others for their donations.
Minutes before James Kaspar introduced today’s program, the microphone situation was resolved – whew!  James introduced Honorary Rotarian Jo Casterline as Ellen Browning Scripps.  Jo gave a great performance that was educational, informative and humorous.  Jo’s husband, Paul Casterline, was a member of our club for many years.  Jim Hyldahl presented a book for Jo to sign which will be donated to the RB Middle School Library.
Our next meeting is at noon on January 25th.  The speaker will be Executive Director Greg Anglea of Interfaith Services Organization.  President Mike ended the meeting with a quote from Martin Luther King, Jr., “The arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice.”

Respectfully submitted,
Sandie Dewane
