Minutes January 12, 2017

President Benita welcomed members to the first evening meeting of 2017.

Pledge of Allegiance was led by Past President Shirley Napierala, who reminded us that there are 5 American flags standing on the moon.

Russ Haskell gave the inspiration message. He was moved by the spirit of the refugee children in the war torn middle east, as shown in recent news coverage.

There were a number of wives and other guests at the meeting, in spite of the rain. Our greeter, Dick Norfolk, enlisted Gary and Dee Saks to lead our welcome song.

President Benita thanked the volunteers for the week: Joel Doss and Troy Daum at the front desk,
Dave Brooks for set up, Rz Norris for scribe, and James Kaspar our photographer.

President Benita announced that a Celebration of Life for Jim Edwards will be held from3:00 to 6:00 pm, on Tuesday, January 24th , at the Rancho Bernardo Inn.  Also, Dan Malloy is recovering from a knee replacement.

She also announced that our meetings at Bernardo Heights Country Club should resume the end of March.

Past President Arilla St. Laurent asked Past Presidents to meet after the meeting on January 19 to discuss the Demotion Party.

Finemaster, John O’Neill provided lots of laughs while collecting fines and accepting “Happy Bucks” from members.

This evening's program was “Who Am I?”, featuring President Benita Page, President Elect Mike Fuqua and President Elect Nominee Doug Dawson.

President Benita spoke of her extensive career in the insurance business as well as her far reaching volunteer experience and years in Rotary. She thanked club members for their support.

President Elect Mike, a native San Diegan, comes from an extended Navy family. He was a career Naval officer, serving as a helicopter pilot and trainer. He retired from the Navy with the rank of Commander. He joined Rotary 2 years ago, looking for a link to community volunteering. His goal as President will be to continue the service concept of Rotary.

President Elect Nominee Doug has been a Rotarian for 14 months. He served in the US Coast Guard before his career in sales and management of various packaging companies. He is in the process of developing his vision for his term as President.

Two upcoming programs:
January 19th:  Dr. Shawn Carlson-Science Literary Crisis
January 26th: FAA Southern California

President Benita closed the meeting with two quotes:

"The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others."

"I should not talk so much about myself if there were anybody else whom I knew as well."
