Meeting Minutes
February 23, 2017
February 23, 2017
President Benita brought the meeting to order and asked past President Don Glover to lead us in the Pledge of Allegiance. Before doing so, he regaled us with a story about the boy who designed the 50 star flag and raised his grade from a B- to an A. His better half Cathy Glover then inspired us with some thoughts about sports including a Yogi Barra quote: “Baseball is 90 per cent mental. The other half is physical”.We had two visiting Rotarians including Michael Rennie of RB Sunrise and our speaker Mark Neville of Club #33. Past president Jim Sommer did his usual great job leading us in our welcome song.
Benita thanked our volunteers: room setup by Judy Lutticken and past President Paul Donick; check-in by Joel Doss and past President Kathleen Smith; photography by James Kaspar and these words by your humble scribe, past President Dave Brooks. We had a bunch of announcements from President Benita. The board has decided to keep the current meeting format of one evening meeting per month. Carpools will be established to bring those members who do not wish to drive at night. There will be a District Peace Conference this Saturday 2/25. The District Training Assembly will be 3/18. The District Conference will be on Saturday, 5/20 and the club is subsidizing the cost of attendance by $25. It is again a joint conference with D5320 and will be held at the Liberty Station Conference Center.
Vern Cook told us that we will assemble hygiene bags after the 3/2 club meeting with the items donated by club members. The completed bags will be taken to Interfaith Community Services for distribution to guests there.
Benita announced the passing of Suzie Lisio. Suzie was a Paul Harris Fellow, the Rotarian of the Year for 2007-08 and club president 2010-11. Suzie was a teacher, wife of member Don, mother of two and grandmother of two. She had a great sense of humor and was a pleasure to work with. There will be a celebration of her life on February 26th from 4 pm to 7 pm. The location is the Lisio residence at 13024 Polvera Avenue in 92128.
We had cake and sang Happy Birthday to John Goodrich and Kathleen Smith. Michael Rennie invited us to the Poway Center for the Performing Arts for youth education and outreach events. Club Foundation President Gary Saks gave a grant sponsored by John Kasser to Victoria Cavaliere of Tender Loving Canines. The service dog attending the presentation took the check with his drooly mouth, will it clear?Gary also noted that we should recognize the meeting attendance achievements of our past member by using his name: the Jim Edwards Perfect Attendance Awards. Done!
Past President Troy Daum told us that we were going to have a booth at RB Alive! this year which takes place on Sunday, June 4th. We will need volunteers to staff the booth.
Past President Bob Vaughn introduced our speaker Mark Neville who spoke about the Holiday Bowl and Poinsettia Bowl, both a long-time San Diego tradition.
President Benita closed the meeting with a sports quote by Vince Lombardi: “Football is like life – it requires perseverance, self-denial, hard work, sacrifice, dedication and respect for authority.”
