Rotary meeting minutes for 2/1/18

President “El Jefe” Fuqua opened the meeting by leading us in the traditional Rotary Motto. He then recognized volunteers Frances Blair as Greeter, Cathy Glover for leading the Pledge and Joel Doss, Don Glover and Larry Saunders for manning the check-in desk. Our guitar singing maestro in the form of one his favorite songs “Today” by the New Christy Minstrels led the Inspirational Message. Also thanked were club photographer James Kaspar, John O’Neill as Scribe and the setup crew of Paul Donick and Judy Lutticken.

President Mike announced that Karen Stelman has been accepted into the RB Hall of Fame. Everyone roundly applauded Karen. Congratulations! He then recognized Don Glover as our candidate for the RB Hats Off to Volunteers organization. Nice going, Don! El Jefe then shared the 2018/2019 theme “Be The Inspiration.

Doug Dawson reported that our tree planting adventure at the Sikes Adobe put us 20% over our goal of planting one tree for each of our club members. Cathy Glover thanked all of the dictionary project volunteers and all the Rotarians who ordered See’s Valentine’s holiday candy.

Shirley Napierala announced that new Rotary shirts are available online for $25. Rotary Foundation Chair, Dan Barrios, presented Paul Donick a PH recognition pin for reaching $5000 in donations. Thank you for your generosity, Paul! Former President, Benita Page, held an election for the club officer candidates. She announced later that the voting results were unanimous in favor of the entire slate.

Finemaster John O’Neill fined Doug Dawson for getting his photo in the paper and David King for slipping by the Greeter without being greeted. Many generous Rotarians contributed Happy Bucks.

Sonny Googins introduced our speaker, Joe Sigurdson, co-founder of Boys To Men. The number of boys growing up without fathers in their lives has reached epidemic proportions. High rates of divorce and out-of-wedlock births have created a generation of fatherless boys. Their community mentoring approach is drawing high praise from school principals, administrators and teachers for its documented ability to improve the academic performance, attendance and attitude, and reduce discipline issues, expulsion and dropout rates, of their most at-risk boys. School records show boys who participated for one school year improved their GPA by an average of 27% and their discipline incidents declined by 85%.

Our program for the February 8th meeting will be the RB entrants in the Four-Way Test speech contest.
