Meeting Minutes
August 4, 2016
President Benita brought the meeting to order and the Pledge of Allegiance was led by immediate past President Arilla St. Laurent. Past President Bob Vaughn gave us an inspirational thought regarding the 100th anniversary of the Rotary Foundation, including a quote from its founder Arch Klumph. Our greeter today was new member Rob Pringle but we had no guests except for our speakers. Past President Jim Sommer did his usual great job leading us in our welcome song. Benita welcomed back our favorite peripatetic couple John and Secretary Jeanne Hawkins and John Kasser who is now very mobile after going through intensive physical therapy.
Benita thanked our volunteers: room setup by Sgt. at Arms Judy Lutticken, Vern Cook, and past President Paul Donick; check-in by Joel Doss and Kathleen Smith; photography by James Kaspar; past President Bill Angus for doing the newsletter and these words by your humble scribe, past President Dave Brooks. Benita called Paul to the podium to receive a Rotary coin for being a long-term, dependable contributor to the set-up crew.Karen Stelman gave the Family of Rotary report and mentioned that Jim Edwards was having increased difficulty with his hearing.
Larry Saunders told us about volunteer opportunities including Feeding America on August 6th, Ronald McDonald House on August 9th and the Salvation Army on August 13th. See his emails to the club for more info.Past president and your humble scribe Dave Brooks invited members to attend District Council the evening of August 16th. It will be at Paradise Point Resort and the speaker will be SDPD Chief Shelly Zimmerman. The cost is $45 and we will carpool.
Benita also asked us to wear our Rotary shirts on August 18th when District Governor Marilyn Sanders visits. The standing fine for pink in men’s shirts will be cancelled for just that day.
We heard another fabulous joke from Joe Max.Foundation Chair James Kaspar congratulated John Kasser for becoming a Paul Harris Fellow and presented him with a pin and certificate.
Membership chair and Past President Don Glover told us all that August is Membership Month. We have an updated membership brochure to tell people about us and Don will be sending a survey to all members to assess how vibrant we are. He also reminded us that attrition never sleeps and to meet our goal of growing by 6 members we must also overcome the probable loss of 6 members. So we must add 12 to meet our goal.
Our eloquent Finemaster and Past President John O’Neill fined everyone not wearing his or her Rotary pin $5. He also extracted a goodly amount of Happy Bucks from several happy donors.
Speaker chair Vern Cook introduced Tim Belanger who spoke about Retired Senior Volunteer Patrol in RB, which provides assistance to SDPD.
President Benita closed the meeting with some funny canine quotes.
