Rotary Meeting Notes by Sandie Dewane, Scribe
August 31, 2017

President Mike Fuqua called the meeting to order and we began by reciting the Rotary motto. Joe Gandelman incorporated a bit of humor prior to leading us in the Pledge of Allegiance. Bob Barr gave an excellent inspirational message.

Greeter Jim Hyldahl introduced four guests and one visiting Rotarian – Alexander from Russia. Jim did a great job leading us in the Welcome Song and is giving Joel Doss, Gary Saks, and Jim Sommer some competition. Not to be outdone by Jim Hyldahl’s musical talent, Jim Sommer then enthusiastically led us in singing “America the Beautiful.” Our club is fortunate to have so many talented and willing singers 😊.

President Mike thanked the following volunteers: Set Up Crew – Judy Lutticken and Doug Dawson; Front Desk – Kathleen Smith, Joel Doss and Bob Barr; Photographer – James Kaspar and Scribe – Sandie Dewane.

August Birthday wishes were sung to Tesha Young and Sandie Dewane, followed by delicious chocolate cake – yum! President Mike thanked Larry and Virginia Valente for hosting the fabulous TGIX party at their home on 8/25. He reported that Alex Lawn’s Honorary Mayor Campaign party on 8/28 was a huge success.
Other announcements: The LEAD conference is scheduled for October 14-15, 2017. One more LEAD Counselor is needed for the 8th Grade camp. Our Club is sponsoring 8 middle school students – 4 from Bernardo Heights and 4 from Oaks Valley. Anyone interested should contact Paul Pierce at 760-942-9911. Doug Dawson is hoping to get a group together to attend a San Diego Gulls game. He asked for a show of hands to see if there was any interest. A number of Rotarians raised their hands and Doug will try for a mid-November event. Reminder that the Rotary Foundation Seminar is coming up at the Poway Performing Arts Center. So far there are 16 attending. Ron Hunt spoke briefly about the Toronto tours he is coordinating and said slots are filling up so if anyone is interested in participating to let him know asap. Our club has 27 members and guests registered to attend the Rotary International Convention in Toronto. President Mike mentioned that details are being worked out on how our Club can best support those impacted by Hurricane Harvey.

Maguy Feghali was recognized with a Paul Harris Fellow presentation by Dan Barrios. Congratulations and thank you Maguy!

Amidst “boo’s and jeers”, Finemaster John O’Neill persevered in doling out fines to two tables of males who could not attract any females to sit with them. Larry Valente made a quick attempt to move to another table, but wasn’t successful. Shirley Napierala, Alex Lawn and Scott Lawn were fined for showing up in the newspaper again! Happy bucks were collected from numerous people and just as the Finemaster’s duties were coming to an end, it was noted that James Kaspar’s shirt had the dreaded “pink” color in it. He was duly fined.

John Kasser introduced today’s speaker. Del Ritchhart gave a presentation entitled “Family History Can Be Fun” and also surprising as he found out in his personal quest to find out more about his family’s roots. He gave us helpful information on how to get started, how to organize research, and recommended Genealogy Software Programs. A very interesting, educational and humorous presentation. Thanks, John, for another great program.

Our next meeting is on September 7th. Rick Shea, President of the San Diego County Board of Education is the speaker.
President Mike closed the meeting with two quotes: “The function of education is to teach one to think intensively and to think critically. Intelligence plus character – that is the goal of true education.” Martin Luther King, Jr. “Education breeds confidence. Confidence breeds hope. Hope breeds peace.” Confucius.
Respectfully submitted,
