Rancho Bernardo Rotary August 24, 2017 Meeting Minutes
The RB Rotary Club meeting of August 24th was called to order by President Mike at 12:30 p.m.  followed by the Pledge of Allegiance led by Alex Lawn. A moving inspirational message was presented by Gary Saks encouraging members to support organ donations and  consider becoming organ donors, especially for kidney transplants; the waiting time is as long as 5 years He noted that his son's PKD, Polycystic Kidney Disease, is an example of potential beneficiaries of kidney transplants.
Our Greeter, Arilla St. Laurent welcomed guests (6) including two visiting Rotarians, one from Del Mar and the other The Golden Triangle. We all chimed in with the welcome song led by Joel Doss.

Volunteers for the meeting were thanked by President Mike: Scribe, Sonny Googins, Front Desk, Joel Doss & Karen Stelman; Set-up, Paul Donnick and Judy Lutticken; and our faithful, talented photographer, James Kaspar.
Announcements were many: RB Board will support Alex Lawn's Honorary Mayoral Campaign with a $500 contribution,  DNHS Interact needs another  volunteer, RBHS Interact on target for organization, TGIX at Valente's this Friday, Foundation Seminar is being coordinated by Dan Barrios-Red Badgers are complimentary, Service Committee gaining momentum-contact Vern to help, Dictionaries have been funded by District Grant to total of $3,500-thanks to Benita and John Goodrich for submitting grant. Board supported vaccinations for the HpV virus in males with Rotary Club of Nuevo Laredo in Mexico. Details forthcoming.

Fundraising-project(s) -no decision at this time. Ideas being reviewed.
Paul Harris Fellows Presentation was made to Judy Lutticken and Joel Doss, by Dan Barrios. All congratulated them.
Benita Page has created an on-line bidding auction on line to win a fun time at the RB Firehouse, with food, tour of firehouse, and possible ride on engine. See her email. She announced proceeds should go the Gary Sak's  PKD effort.  Arilla reported Family of Rotary. Our fine Fine Master was properly booed, but collected $$s anyway. Dan Barrios created a new Rotary color, christened "Fuqua Pink" which I think he wants to be a permitted pink?
Our Guest Speaker, Derek Abbey was introduced by Jim Sommer. He discussed an intriguing USD program involving transitioning active duty military members to education programs, especially the college's veteran alumni. They  provide a route to success, visible public events, Funding Gala and Veteran's Day Commemoration, as some examples, as well as preparing them for their next civilian career .
Once again, Mark Twain closed the day, "Why waste your money looking up your family tree. Just go into politics and your opponents will do it for you."
