Meeting Minutes 8/17/17

President Mike opened the meeting by asking all of us to recite the Motto. It's nice being up front so you can read it before we all get it memorized!! He thanked our volunteers, Susan King for leading the flag salute and providing some interesting tid bits. Alex Lawn gave the inspirational message and Jim Reid was our greeter. They all got to check off one of their boxes towards earning their gold badge! Joel, Karen and Bob Barr checked members in at the front desk. Paul, Judy and Doug were our set up crew. Thanks to all.

Benita announced that our donations of school supplies to under privileged children was a very successful event. There were't as many children this year but The Salvation Army is always thankful for our gifts and for working the event. They will make sure any left over supplies reach those in need.

Pres. Mike announced that the Club Board approved a contribution (up to $500) for Alex Lawn's Campaign for Honorary Mayor. Good luck Alex!
We are having a very special visitor at next weeks' meeting. His name is Alexander Prosekin from the Rotary Club of Vladivostok, Russia. He is the father of MusiCamp participants Peter and Veronica.

Our August 24 meeting has been moved back inside to the Vista Room but we will still have a BBQ set up just outside the door to the patio. Shorts, sandals and pink shirts are allowed for this event!!

Dan Barrios presented Doug Dawson with a Paul Harris Pin for his contribution to the Paul Harris Society of $1,000 or more. Congratulations Doug! It was so nice to see Karen Edwards at our meeting. She was presented with her gold badge as an honorary member and she even brought a guest who may become a potential member!!

Doug's purchase of the dish garden raffled off brought in $35 to our treasury. One must wonder if he was making amends for something!! Oh, who cares... It was a very nice thing to do. David King and Joe Gandelman were both fined for pink shirts. They're both pretty new and it usually takes just one fine before they never wear a pink shirt to Rotary again.
Sadly, it was announced that Pat Kenny passed away on Aug. 14th. We'll let you know when we have more details.
It was also announced that John Goodrich had prostate surgery this week and is recovering at home. Cards were passed for both but a personal follow up call or card to John would be very much appreciated.

Arilla introduced our speaker, Col. Richard Rothwell, USMC (RET). He went to The Academy with her husband and is currently a spoksman for the Camp Pendleton Historical Society. He related a wonderful story about a horse that was trained to carry heavy loans of ammunition up steep hills during the Korean War in the early 50's. On the trip down, she would carry wounded Marines. She was assigned to the 5th Regiment who were know as "Reckless" as they used heavy, high powered guns which "blew their cover" with volumes of smoke just after being fired. They decided to name the horse Reckless! She went to "Hoof Camp" and was trained to carry the heavy loads, and more often than not, she actually made most of her trips up and down the mountain unaccompanied. She was shot twice but not seriously. She carried on in spite of her injuries. When the war ended, the military would not pay to send her to the states where she could be with her beloved Marines. After a lot of red tape and talking to the right people, they were able to book passage on a ship at no expense to tax payers. She arrived one day before the 1954 Marine Corp Ball and actually went to the affair! There is a statue in front of the museum at Camp Pendleton and there has been a book written about her called Staff Sgt. Reckless. She was even written up in Life Magazine as one of the 100 Greatest Heroes being honored in that publication! She was put out to pasture eventually and gave birth to 3 colts. Aren't females amazing!!

Upcoming programs include:
Aug 24th - Derek Abbey, U of SD Veteran Programs
Aug 31 - Del Ritchhart, Ancestry Research
Alex Lawn has asked for volunteers for his fund raising party on Aug. 28th at CCRB from 5:30 to 7:30. He needs help with the check in desk, selling raffle tickets, etc. Please let him know if you can help. The money raised by he and his opponent will be go to The Rancho Bernardo Business Association for local non-profit groups which include many of the same ones we support through Rotary. There will be prizes, auction items, a putting contest and more.
Jim Hyldahl was thanked for providing his home for the Farewell Party for MusiCamp. This has become a very welcomed tradition and it is so generous of Jim and Joanne. Bless you both.
Respectfully submitted, Karen Stelman
