President Arilla call the meeting to order and John Goodrich was asked to say the flag salute. He did a banner job in giving some interesting facts about our flag and then started the pledge facing in the wrong direction. The flag was on the other side of the room. The members let him know to turn around as laughter broke out as he realized his mistake. Off to a good start!
Stephanie Wolterman and her darling 14 month old son, Henry, joined us for the last time today. She announced that her husband has new orders to North Carolina and then on to Japan. What an adventure. He will be flying the new F-35 for the Marine Corps. She is still loyal to our club and even provided the April birthday cake for the members. Troy Daum pointed out that we may have the biggest age spread of any Rotary Club between Henry at 1+ years and Joe Max at 96 (?)! Henry was made an Honorary Member at his first meeting!
ROTARIANS AT WORK DAY was a big success. Eighteen Rotarians met at the Boy's and Girl's Club of 4S Ranch at 9 a.m. on Sat. and cleared out a large storage room to make way for their first Teen Club meeting area. We filled 1 1/2 dumpster's, sorted and folded a large number of shirts and uniforms and had piles of old paper work that will be shredded. They also had 50 to 75 chairs they couldn't use so the Salvation Army was coming by to pick those up. We moved filing cabinets, a ping pong table and two small practice basketball backstops to make way for the new Teen Center. Many people and groups benefited from our efforts and it was such a good feeling to help them out!
We have had a tremendous response from our request to help fund our RB Rotary Club Foundation without doing a large fund raiser. There are two weeks left and then we'll have a drawing for some very nice prizes that will be on display at the meeting. For every $50 you donate, you get a ticket for the drawing and you don't have to be present to win. 100% of your donation is tax deductible as it all goes to fund our charitable gifts and grants. You will also get Recognition Points towards your Paul Harris Fellow Award. Checks can be sent to our P.O. Box if you can't attend a meeting before the 12th. That address is : RB Rotary Club Foundation, PO Box 28501, Rancho Bernardo, CA 92198. The drawing will be held May 12th at our evening meeting. Don't be left out!
John Kasser introduced our speaker for the day who was Tomas Herrera Mishler, CEO of the Balboa Park Conservancy. The 1400 acres of land was first purchased in 1868 and a few of the landscape architectures came and went as their were disagreements on what and where things should be done. Our biggest loss with Olmstead Landscapers who designed the 700 acre park in NY City. They had an argument over where "The Garden Fair" should be built and they left.
President and CEO Mishler is conducting hour long walking tours, introducing the mission and work of the Balboa Park Conservancy. We have been invited to attend a tour from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m., meeting at the House of Hospitality. The dates are: May 12, June 7, July 14 and August 2. You can RSVP to Briana@balboapark.org and ask any questions at that time. Please arrive at 8:45 a.m. for coffee and pastries.

The members let him know to turn around as laughter broke out as he realized his mistake. Off to a good start!Doug Dawson gave us a very meaningful Inspirational Thought and Brian Flaherty was our greeter. He had to leave early as his wife had a back problem and couldn't be left alone for long. Jim Sommer led us in our welcome song with a new twist. He made it into a "round" by dividing up the room. We had do overs as we messed up the first time but it was fun and entertaining.

Suzie Lisio is home and doing well but very tired so she won't be joining us for awhile. Shirley Napierala fell and injured right foot and left knee. The Dr. has put an "apparatus" type brace on both injuries but there were no broken bones. Cards an emails are always welcome. More to come after we see how she's doing down the road.

Our Fine Master was out of town so Troy Daum carried the torch and did a "Fine" job.

The architecture reflects a Mexican and Peruvian look. The Conservancy was formed in 2012 to preserve, enchance, and envision the future of Balboa Park.

Frances Blair has asked for volunteers to head up the collection of socks and undies for our Veterans to be given out at the annual "Stand Down Day for Vets". She is doing her own stand down days following another scary bout with a small seizure, so she needs someone to take over this worth while cause. Please give her a call if you're interested.
May 5th is our next noon meeting and our very own John Kasser with be our speaker on "Women in Sports - Title 9".
Yours in Rotary, Karen Stelman
