Karen Stelman gave the Family of Rotary report. She welcomed Dan Barrios back after having surgery just two weeks ago.

Vern Cook, on behalf of Frances Blair, reminded us about the Interfaith Food Drive in process by our Club. There is one more week to go, so please bring your non-perishable food items next week. He also announced that there will be a carpool for members volunteering for Rotarians at Work day at Miramar. Benita reminded us that Vern will be honored at “Hats Off to Volunteers” on April 22, 2017 at Rancho Bernardo High School. Congratulations, Vern!

Benita mentioned that four new members (Joe, Phil, Sally, Traci) attended our recent New Member Orientation. Mike Fuqua told us about the Del Mar Fair Toy Drive that we will be participating in again. Volunteers are needed. John Kassar requested that if any of us have contacts or ideas for upcoming speaker presentations to email him with the information.

Congratulations to Sonny Googins and Bob Barr who were awarded Service Above Self coins for their outstanding work on Model UN.
Benita updated us on the new dues structure approved by the Board. Effective July 1, 2017, annual dues for married couples will be $400 vs. $250 per person. Corporate Membership annual dues will be $400 for two members, who can attend alternately or together.

Gary Saks thanked those who have donated to our Fundraising Campaign so far. He reminded us that there is one more week to donate. The campaign is taking the place of the golf tournament. The Fundraising Committee’s next meeting is set for April 27 at 1:30 p.m. They are discussing ideas for new fundraising events. Anyone interested in joining the committee should contact Benita.

John Kasser served as auctioneer for the plant auction, bringing in $45 for the Club.

Rick Bramble put on his “Fine Master” hat, filling in for John O’Neill. He brought in tons of Happy Bucks from many of us, most notably from Mira Bozanich who is celebrating 20 years in Rotary. Rick also “encouraged” Troy Daum and Gary Saks to donate funds in exchange for Sees Candy gift boxes, which they happily did.

Jim Sommer introduced today’s speaker: Dr. Everard Meade of the Trans Border Institute who gave an interesting and informative presentation. Unfortunately time was up before we got to Q & A, but he stayed after the meeting to answer any questions. Charley Crew presented a book for Dr. Meade’s signature that will be donated to the RB Middle School Library. San Diego City Attorney Mara Elliott is next week’s speaker.

President Benita ended the meeting with a quote by the Dalai Lama: “Love and compassion are necessities, not luxuries. Without them humanity cannot survive.”
The meeting was adjourned.
