It's no secret that Rotary has a strong commitment to youth. Our club fully embraces supporting youth activities by funding scholarships, sending kids to leadership camps, holding 4-way speech contests, sponsoring Model UN teams, supporting Boy and Girl Scouts, and many other youth oriented activities. Last week, thanks to our member Jim Reid, we were honored to host our first Rotary Youth Music Competition in several years. Jim holds a PhD in music as well as having a strong interest in supporting youth, so it was a perfect match. We had 5 contestants from Rancho Bernardo High School and Del Norte High School who played the piano, fluet, french horn and viola. All were superb! The professionalism and musicality exhibited by these kids was phenomenal and our members uniformly enjoyed the show. We were priviliged to have as judges John Piccolo from the Poway Symphony and John-Luc Addison, Music Director of St Bart's Episcopal Church in Poway, and Jim Reid from our club. The winner of the event received a check for $175 and will move on to the next level of this District-wide competition where the ultimate prize could be $2500. Well done to Jim and all the contestants.
