Rotarians Skydiving to “End Polio Now”

November 1, 2020—The Rancho Bernardo Rotary Club marked World Polio Day (October 24th) a week late on October 31st (Halloween) by supporting several members and friends in a skydiving event.  Led by Don Glover, whose 80th birthday is also October 31st, eight people including current club President Alex Robertson and Past District Governor Mike Stelman jumped at the SkyDive San Diego Center in Otay Mesa.  Over 30 RB Rotarians and friends cheered them on.  One of our members, Jo Casterline, who is a polio survivor and 91 years old was in attendance and although she did not jump, she took a ride in the airplane.  Don’s enthusiastic leadership in arranging this event has been the key to motivating others to participate.

Rotary International members have contributed more than $2.1 billion and countless volunteer hours to protect nearly 3 billion children in 122 countries from this paralyzing disease.  A significant boost to the End Polio Now campaign has been collaboration with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation which provides a two for one match for each dollar donated by Rotary.   The RB Rotary Club has been a strong supporter of this effort over the years.  This year we collected almost $5000 for donation to “End Polio Now” which will turn into $15,000 from the Gates Foundation.  For more information about RB Rotary go to rbrotary.org.
