Due to the COVID-19 Threat we have shifted our club meetings to Zoom. To join us contact any of our officers or our membership chairman and we'll send you an invite and link.
RB Rotarians zoomed in, one at a time, to the invitation from President Alex at 11 a.m. on Sept. 3rd. Charley Crew welcomed each of us and attending guests to the meeting. Cathy Glover, a retired teacher, reminded us of our school days that began with the Pledge of Allegiance as she led us in the pledge. John Sullivan revealed his source of Inspiration as he took us to the ocean. We enjoy the calming, cooling effect when we visit and walk the beach, watch sunsets, slowing time, and feeling grateful. He ended with a JFK reference that John Kennedy noted - "the ocean gives us a feeling of going back from whence we came." Joel Doss performed our Welcome song to attending guests as we lip-synced under mute.
President Alex thanked the meeting volunteers: Zoom Master, Mike Fuqua, Sonny Googins Scribe, and Bill Angus, publisher of our Newsletter. Arilla, Family of Rotary, reminded us to inform her of Rotarian members who might be ill or having operations, etc. It took John O'Neill no time at all following his well-earned chorus of Boos to begin fines for photo ops, etc. and to receive happy bucks for many occasions.
Members added funds to the Foundation effort to support Lebanon for the country's explosion disaster in Beirut. Vern Cook advised us of the "Stand Down" effort occurring on November 22. We are asked to donate new underwear and socks to veterans. Keep in mind female and male donations. More later for drop-off details.
Dan Barrios who keeps tabs on our Foundation changing pin status will present a Bequest Society - Major Donor pin to Steve LaPointe. Dan's collection of jewelry is substantial until he can physically present the pins at a live meeting.
Dave Brooks reminded us of the historic record-setting perfect attendance achieved years ago by Jim Edwards. Dave followed that by recognizing our own Gayla for her 14 years! Congratulations.
Charley Crew informed us that the Foundation gifts and matching grants program is under way. Deadline for submission is Oct.1. President Alex told us that the donation of $5,000 was made to the Poway Unified School Districts Title 1 schools.
John Goodrich introduced Shauna Grisler, Escondido Police Detective in the Human trafficking Division. She has a BA in Criminal Justice and is bi-lingual. Shauna concentrated on 'patrolling' and how to recognize signs of trafficking : younger girls with older men, hanging out at hotel/motels, not in school, few personal belongings, no cash, multiple hotel keys . Operations frequently are out of nail salons, spas and massage parlors. Many encounters begin with on-line contacts. The young recruits often become recruiters of others. Forced labor is a frequent factor, unforeseen initially by victims. Terry Heck virtually presented our gift book to Shauna.
The next meeting is September 10 at 5:50 p.m. a return to the second Thursday routine of an evening meeting-especially to accommodate our working Rotarians. The program, Debra Ericklson, the San Diego Zoo.
President Alex rang the bell to conclude the meeting at 12:35. 37 members attended.
Sonny Googins, Scribe.
