Co-President Susan King called the meeting to order and led the reciting of the Four Way Test. The Pledge was led by Joe Leventhal. The Inspirational message, given by Ron Hunt, who spoke of being grateful for things in our daily life.
Don Glover, filling in for Vern, introduced our guests, including five Marine Corp Sergeants, from Mira Mar Naval Air Station, who were supporting todays recipient of NCO Sword sponsored by our club. Joel led our Welcome song.

Co-President Susan thanked todays volunteers: Joel Doss, Athenea Luciano and Diane Remick at the front desk, John Kasser for set up, photographer James Kaspar, Scribe Rz Norris, and John O’Neill for organizing the volunteers.

Alex Robertson mentioned that he, Phil Warner and Athenea Luciano had attended a Rotary Leadership Institute, and recommended the experience. Alex also mentioned that he will be speaking at the Military Orders of World Wars, and the history of the D Day landings of WWII, the CCRB on October 5th.

Rz Norris suggested a Halloween costumed meeting for October 31st (members on lunch hour from work are exempt), as well as suggesting it was time for another TGIX get together and asking for volunteers to host.

Don Glover, Jim Reed and Susan King all announced success in reaching goals for applying for matching grants.  Don also mentioned needing volunteers to assist with the Sunrise Clubs annual “Beernardo” Festival, and the sign ups for the Annual Thanksgiving Luncheon.

In addition to the Poway Symphony grant, Jim Reed announced he has 20 seats available for the opening Symphony concert (more information to follow), and the annual Music Contest.  Shirley Naperilla said her annual “Adopt a Family” drive will begin in October to raise funds or gifts for low income families in Poway.  Though Vern was not there, the upcoming October 5th registration for Interact program was also mentioned.

Mike Stelman introduce Corporal Megan Evans, this year’s recipient of the NCO Sword in recognition as the Honor Graduate of the 3rd Marine Corp Aircraft Wing Corporal’s Course. Corporal Evans is an Air Traffic Controller.

New member, Tom Kapocius, received his Membership packet and temporary Red badge from Mike Stelman and Alan Turner.  The gold pin was withheld until his last requirement is completed.

An excellent birthday cake was served to all celebrating September birthdays of Club members. Shirley Naperilla brought the cake.  While there were no announcements for Family of Rotary, but Arilla acted as Fine Master for the meeting.  Few fines, but lots of Happy Bucks.

Patrick Chaffee introduced President elect Alex Robertson as our speaker for today. Alex has extensive world wide experience in many areas.  His topic today was San Diego High School education vs other Countries. His talk is a result of a research project on local education done for Mayor Faulkner.  His summation was that teachers are not the problem for the failure of students, but rather lack of funding for schools where it is needed most. The United States ranks 31st within 31 industrial countries.
Don Glover was tagged this month for the “Joe Max moment”, and his joke WAS funny!
