Meeting Minutes
September 20, 2018

President Doug brought the meeting to order and led us in reciting the 4 Way Test. The Pledge of Allegiance was led by a surprised Past President Ed Knight, who promised to read his email more often in the future. Past President Benita Page inspired us with a story about Pilsen in the Czech Republic. Every 5 years the residents of this town celebrate its liberation by General George Patton’s 3rd Army in 1945. They decorate the graves of the US and Canadian soldiers buried there, have a parade and seek autographs from visiting Americans.

Our greeter was Past President Gary Saks and he introduced our guests. He then did his usual fabulous job of leading us in his favorite piece of music, our Welcome Song.

Doug thanked our volunteers: room setup by Paul Donick; check-in by Joel Doss, Jim Sommer and Susan King; photography by our own award-winning James Kaspar; Bill Angus for doing the newsletter and these words by your humble scribe, Dave Brooks.

Community Service chair Vern Cook told us about a cleanup project in Seven Oaks on October 13th, which was organized by Past President Jim Hyldahl. We will be picking up stuff from homes there and hauling it to large dumpsters. The time is 8am-12noon and food and drinks will be provided. 9 have signed up so far, we need more.

Doug showed us pictures of him and Assistant Governor Don Glover attending a dinner celebrating the 30th anniversary of the RB Sunrise club, which we helped charter. He also showed a very colorful picture of Past President John Goodrich trimming plants at the Stein Education Center of Vista Hill in San Diego.

John was assisted by Past Presidents Mike Fuqua and Dave Brooks, Pat Chaffee and Phil Warner. We cleared weeds and trimmed plants in a strip 15 feet wide and 500 feet long on the north side of this facility.

Past President Arilla St. Laurent circulated a card for Sharyn Davie, the daughter of Bob and Darlene Wells. Bob was a long-time member of RB Rotary who passed away in 2012. Darlene passed away last week. She also announced that the remembrance for Joe Max will be on September 21st from 4pm – 7pm. The location is 16414 Ramada Drive, San Diego, CA 92128.

Don introduced our speaker Betty Mohlenbrock, the founder and president of Reading Legacies, which advocates reading to children to improve family and community connections.
