Meeting Minutes
September 2, 2021
Co-president Alex Robertson brought our meeting to order at 6:00 pm and led us in reciting the 4 Way Test. Co-president Athenea Luciano was under the weather and couldn’t attend.

Secretary Jeanne Hawkins rang the opening bell and the Pledge of Allegiance was led by new member Terri Hunter.

Toby Westbrook inspired us with a discussion of Thomas Jefferson and the phrase “…life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness” which was in Jefferson’s original rough draft of the Declaration of Independence. Jefferson was an Epicurean and believed that pleasure was the chief good in life and should be pursued. Toby said that Jefferson was also virtuous and that Jefferson thought it was important to put public service above one’s self interest. Therefore, by pursuing happiness you are also dedicated to “Service above Self”.

Greeter Vern Cook introduced a bunch of visitors and Joel Doss lead us in singing our euphonious welcome song. Our visitors were mildly stunned and pleased to hear it.

Alex thanked our volunteers: Bill Angus for posting the newsletter; Bob Vaughn and Bill Brehm for room setup; Treasurer Pat Chaffee, Joel and his mom Mary Beth for staffing the front desk; photograghy by James Kaspar and president-elect Alan Turner as Zoom Master with assistance by your humble scribe, Dave Brooks.

Mike Fuqua announced the the next social event would be a visit to the Midway where he is a docent. The date for this is to be determined based on BHCC availability.

Foundation chair Bob Vaughn then recognized Maguy Feghali and Toby for their contributions to the Rotary Foundation.

Arilla St. Laurent said the Family of Rotary is well. Finemaster John O’Neill extracted many dollars from the membership. Jim Hyldahl is turning 80 next week and donated $80. Lynn Ross is going to be a grandmother with a baby girl due in February, 2022 and donated $100. When Bob Vaughn saw Lynn on Zoom he also acknowledged her contributions to The Rotary Foundation.
Mike returned to the podium and talked about a new project we funded in Pune, India. This project will create an affordable, reusable cloth based sanitary pad solution for needy girls and women in the region. We provided $540 in cash and matched that with $540 in District Designated Funds. A great example of Rotarians working together to solve a tough problem.

Jim Reid then introduced Jamal Felton of Rancho Bernardo High School where he serves as the coordinator of career guidance.

Jamal also coaches the RBHS football team, and he teaches a class in work experience internship.

Jim Hyldahl presented Jamal with a book about Jim Thorpe titled Undefeated: Jim Thorpe and the Carlisle Indian School Football Team.

President Alex adjourned the meeting at 7:10 pm.
