September 17th Rotary meeting notes

Esteemed club president, Alex Robertson, opened the zoom meeting by having the members recite the 4-Way test. Volunteers Karen Stelman led us in the Pledge by offering up a prayer for MIA’s, Dan Malloy gave us a fine Inspirational Message, Joel Doss did an excellent job in singing the welcome song and Jim  Hyldahl acting as Virtual Greeter to all as they signed on to zoom.

Also thanked were Mike Fuqua for handling the zoom setup, John O’Neill as Scribe and Bill Angus for formatting and publishing the meeting notes.

Athenea Luciano asked for assistance in helping our sister club in Imperial Valley to help in fighting their overwhelming surge in Covid-19 cases. Other announcements came from Mike Fuqua with a RB Rotary Foundation update,  Diane Remick with information on supporting the Scripps Poway club blood drive and Dan Barrios with a Rotary Foundation update.

Finemaster John O’Neill thanked Joe Leventhal for getting his picture in the paper, then fined him $10 for said act. Asking for Happy Bucks encouraged Joe to add another $90 to his donation, who cited his absence from the club and how happy he was to be back. Bob Vaughn added another $10 and Pat Chaffee added $24 in recognition of his 24th wedding anniversary.

Karen Stelman reported that 104 cases of poinsettias have been to date, well ahead of last years’ pace.  Arilla St. Laurent announced that packing the Peace Bags for military families is October 1st. The date to get all the contents together is 9/25.

Speaker coordinator John Goodrich introduced Luis Pena from the S.D. District Attorney’s office, who spoke to us about human trafficking. This scourge is the second highest growing crime behind drug trafficking. Women are enticed into the trade in many devious ways including modeling offers, group homes and social media platforms. State human trafficking cases were 1656. Part of the problem in eradicating this menace is light laws and short prison terms.

The next meeting on 9/24 will feature speaker Freedom Ballentine from The Old Globe Theater.
