Rotary Club of Rancho Bernardo

September 16, 2021

The meeting was opened by Co-President Alex Robertson.  He led the members in reciting the Four Way Test.  There was a small group in attendance today!

The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Ron Hunt, who noted that on “9/11” we were one nation of people united, and that the same unity does not exist with our nation today, while there are thousands of people from other countries wanting to come here and enjoy the freedoms that we Americans do.

Doug Dawson, giving the Inspirational Message, said he had attended the District Conference in Coronado this past weekend.  The opening of the Conference, with a timeline video of the events on “9/11”, followed by a massing of local military and first responders inside the venue, was truly moving and inspirational.

The Greeter today was Resa Coopat.  She welcomed two visitors.  The Welcome Song was led by Joel Doss.

Co-President Alex thanked the volunteers for today: Rz Norris, scribe, Bill Brehm, Sergeant-at-Arms, Arilla St Laurent, Pat Chaffee and Joel Doss on the front desk, James Kaspar for photography, and newsletter editor Bill Angus.

Vern Cook announced that the Stand Down project is back, scheduled for November 21st.  The Club will collect sox and underwear for men and women for the next three meetings, or items can be delivered to Johanna Mullins.  He will send an email with Johanna’s address.  Jeannie Hawkins said the next Club TGIX will be November 4th, at the Midway Museum.  Cost is $40 per person, which includes a tour of the ship. (Everyone agreed that the Poway Lake picnic was a huge success!).

Bob Vaughn explained that in order to be a member of the Paul Harris Society you need to register online (www.rotary.org), and commit to donating $1000 per year to the Foundation.  If you give $1000 over a period of several years, you will be a Paul Harris Fellow.

Kenneth Heinz, a visiting Rotarian from the Sunrise Club, which is currently returning its Charter to the District. He recognized that our Rancho Bernardo Club had originally sponsored Sunrise when it formed, and that the two clubs had worked in tandem many times on different projects. Co-President Alex said we would welcome Kenneth into our Rancho Bernardo Club.  Our Club had a similar experience with the Miramar Club.

Co-President Alex introduced past President Doug Dawson as our speaker for today, to talk about Our Rotary Club and the Club International Grant Committee as well as the recent success of Juarez, Mexico, Community Nursing Education.

Because of the limited attendance at the meeting, this scribe has chosen to print parts of this important presentation.

Our next meeting will be September 23, 2021, same time, same place. The speaker will be Camille Newbern.

Respectfully submitted,
