Meeting Minutes

October 28, 2021

Co-presidents Alex Robertson and Athenea Luciano brought our meeting to order at 12:30 pm and led us in reciting the 4 Way Test.  Our theme today was Halloween and they had great costumes as did several members.

The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Dan Barrios and Terri Hunter inspired us with some thoughts about the benefits of gratitude.  She asked members to stand and relate things they were grateful for, and several did.  She also offered cards to members to send to family and friends to express their gratitude.

Greeter Judy Lutticken introduced a bunch of visitors and Joel Doss lead us in singing our canorous welcome song.  Our visitors may have thought it was a part of the Halloween theme.

Alex thanked our volunteers: Bill Angus for posting the newsletter; Bob Vaughn and Bill Brehm for room setup; Joel and Johanna Mullin for staffing the front desk; photograghy by James Kaspar and your humble scribe, Dave Brooks.

Athenea then inducted our newest member, Karen Sixt.  Karen retired as the Director of Marketing, PR and Outreach for Palomar Pomerado Health System. She is a certified mediator and holds a real estate license. She has been involved in many community organizations including the RB Chamber of Commerce, Soroptimists and a Board Member of Bernardo Heights Country Club. Karen enjoys golf and lives in Rancho Bernardo.

President-nominee Jim Reid announced that tickets for the Poway Symphony would be available after the meeting.

District Membership Chair and La Jolla Golden Triangle member Ron Kohl told us about a 2023 cruise that will benefit the Rotary Foundation.  It will depart from Budapest on April 2nd and end in Giurgiu on April 9th.  The cruise line is AmaWaterways and we will be joined by TRF Trustee Larry Lunsford.  For more info contact Ron at rkohl@expediacruises.com.

We celebrated October birthdays with a special cake.

Jan Goldsmith was congratulated for winning two awards from the San Diego Press Club for his articles in the San Diego Union Tribune.

Foundation Chair Bob Vaughn acknowledged Diane Remick for her 4th Paul Harris award and Felix Luciano for his 3rd.

Arilla St. Laurent updated us on the Family of Rotary; flowers will be sent to Cheryl Roop who lost her husband Bill last week.  She then put on her fine mistress hat.  Everyone not wearing a costume was fined a few bucks.  Toby Westbrook and Jan were fined for wearing shorts.

Dave King encouraged us to buy poinsettias to support the marines at Miramar.  The last day to order is November 15th.  Cathy Glover announced that we will again have See’s candy for sale to benefit our scholarship fund.  The end date of this program is December 3rd.

Arilla introduced our speaker, Kathy Weyer.  Kathy is a past member of our club who now resides in Palm Desert.  She has worked as a therapist and counselor and now has become a published author.  She told us about her books and characters.

As a speaker’s gift, Terry Heck presented Kathy with a book titled The Long Gone Lonesome History of Country Music.

Athenea reminded us that our November 4th meeting will be a visit to the USS Midway with lunch included.

President Alex adjourned the meeting at 1:30 pm.
