Oct. 20th

Our President, Alan Turner, started the meeting with our pledge and introductions of guests.

Our meeting opened with the Four Way Test followed by Pete Griffith leading us in the pledge. It was announced that there is a Blood Drive being held for the Poway-Scripps Rotary Club on Nov. 1st. If you are interested in donating, please go to their website for details. It was also announced that the Rotary District Conference is being held on Oct. 29th. Details are published on the Rotary Web Site. The Sunrise Club held their annual BEERnardo event on Oct. 22nd.

Our Fine Master was up next and collected for Fines and Happy Bucks! Every little bit helps our club!

Our speaker was Askold Hayas who spoke on enlightening us with some history of Ukraine. He also gave us his current perspective of the political landscape there and the country's fight for survival since the Russian invasion. He is a retired history and government teacher, and an Eastern Europe history scholar. Since 2001, he has volunteered at summer camps in Ukraine for children from orphanages, broken homes, and those with disabilities. He also served as an election monitor in Ukraine and recently traveled to there to deliver humanitarian aid.

For hobbies, Askold is an avid reader, artist, hiker and former marathoner. He served in the US Marine Corps and retired as a Captain. His three children attended military academies and are serving in the United States Air Force and Navy Reserves. His wife, Nadia, is a special educator.
His talk will be one of our most interesting speeches we've heard in a long time!! Two days before the war in Ukraine, they rallied 40 million civilians to support the war efforts and shore up Keiv, the capital of Ukraine.
Meeting News: Gary Saks drew a fine for not introducing his wife! Mike Stelman found a grower who will provide us with Poinsettias. They reserved 100 cases for us! There are 8 plants to a case and are always beautiful!

Jo Casterline received her 4th Rotary Fellowship pin!

Athenea was our Fine Master and fined everyone who had open toe shoes to pay $5!
Our next meetings speakers will be Kristen Amicone and Simona Valanciute from Oasis San Diego.
Respectfully Submitted,
Karen Stelman
