Rotary October 19, 2023 Meeting
Scribe notes by Sandie Dewane
President Jim Reid called the meeting to order and we recited the 4-Way Test with him. Shirley Napierala led us in the Pledge of Allegiance.
Greeter Paul Courtright had an easy task as there were no visiting Rotarians or guests. However, Joel Doss was poised to do the Welcome Song and we sang it in honor of member Marybeth Doss! Dave Fitter inspired us with a musical message.
Thanks to today’s volunteers: Front Desk-Pat Chaffee, Joel Doss; Room set-up – Joel Doss, Bob Vaughn; Guest Photographer – Mike Fuqua; Scribe -Sandie Dewane.
Shirley Napierala provided a delicious chocolate, chocolate, chocolate cake in celebration of October birthdays. Thank you, Shirley!
Mike Stelman reminded everyone that our annual Poinsettia Fundraiser supporting the Marines and Sailors at Marine Corps Air Station Miramar is underway and encouraged us to continue getting orders.

Family of Rotary: Sandie Dewane reported that Dan Barrios sends greetings to everyone. We haven’t seen him at our meetings because he is awaiting surgery and is avoiding group settings in an effort to stay healthy prior to surgery. Athenea Luciano is doing well and should be back soon. Jim Sommer is feeling better.
Guest Fine Master Bob Vaughn congratulated, and then fined, Shirley Napierala on the sale of two homes. Some happy bucks were given to support the Camel’s Hair Challenge, which was started by “Camel Master” John Mullin.

Dave Brooks gave happy bucks because he just returned from a trip to Utah to see the eclipse of the sun and tour the nearby parks. He also visited Larry Saunders and April Mitchell, who live in Mesquite NV. Larry and April were active members of our Club for many years and Larry lends his computer expertise to our Vines & Vittles events. Dave was pleased to report that April is recovering from lung cancer, has completed chemotherapy, her hair is growing back and is now receiving immunotherapy.
Ron Hunt introduced today’s speaker – fellow club member Dr. Paul Courtright, Epidemiologist. Based on his experiences living and working in Africa, Paul gave an excellent and informative presentation about the prevention, treatment and elimination of trachoma, a blinding eye disease. It is highly contagious and mostly affects children under the age of 5. Cheryl Roop presented a book, for Dr. Courtright’s signature, which will be donated to the Bernardo Heights Middle School Library.
Next meeting: Thursday, October 26, 2023.
President Jim adjourned the meeting with the ringing of the bell.
Respectfully submitted,
Sandie Dewane, Scribe
