Meeting Minutes

May 7, 2020

President Dave King brought our Zoom meeting to order at 11:05 am and led us in reciting the 4 Way Test. The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Terry Heck, who read us the lyrics from the Lee Greenwood song “I’m Proud to be an American”.  We pledged allegiance to the flag in President Dave’s Zoom background.   Cathy Glover inspired us with some thoughts about things we can no longer take for granted during the time of COVID-19, like handshakes and full theaters, stores and stadiums.

Joel Doss lead us in a crippled-by-Zoom, but nevertheless heart-felt, performance of our beloved Welcome Song.

President Dave thanked our volunteers:  Zoom setup by Mike Fuqua, Bill Angus for doing the newsletter; meeting organization by John O’Neill and these words by your humble scribe, Dave Brooks.

Charley Crew reminded us that if we work with youth during any Rotary activity, we must be certified to do so.  Certification requires an application, a background check, online training and passing a test.  The certification must be renewed annually or every 2 years depending on the activity.  For more info, please see:  https://rotary5340.org/SitePage/youth-protection/youth-certification

Treasurer Pat Chaffee told us that we have reached $6060 in combined Happy Bucks, fines and donations.  Note Pat’s email about the correct Post Office boxes for sending your donations, they are very close:  club is PO Box 28001, San Diego, CA 92198-0001, club foundation is PO Box 28501, San Diego, CA 92198-0501. President Dave encouraged us to keep donating because we have cancelled this year’s fundraiser due to COVID-19.

President Dave is looking into ways we can volunteer.  He talked to the SD Food Bank; they need volunteers but not many.  Dave suggested we put out a food collection barrel at BHCC.  He will also come by your house to pick up food you want to donate.  He will drive all collected food to the SD Food Bank.  If you have any volunteer ideas, please send them to Dave.

If you are not receiving the District 5340 weekly Newsbits, please let President Dave know.

Past District Governor Mike Stelman had a virtual meeting with Rotary International Director Johrita Solari who covers Zones 26 (includes D5340) and 27.  All Rotary business is now conducted virtually and the International Assembly (training for incoming district governors) will be online in January 2021 as well.  Mike also updated us on our support for the military; one example is the sword we give to the top graduate of each NCO training class.  He reminded us that we will again have the Poinsettia Fundraiser during the holidays and that all income will go to supporting the military.

The Family of Rotary from Arilla St. Laurent:  John O’Neill will have back surgery on May 13th.  President Dave said he would reach out to Carol Kasser and ask her to be a part of our club.

Our program today was a Who Am I presented by Jim Hyldahl.  Jim was born on the Southside of Chicago and moved to one of the Quad cities, Moline, IL, when he was young.  This area was the booming center of farm implement manufacturing, led by John Deere.  Jim graduated from St. Ambrose University and married Joanne.  They had two sons and now have four grandchildren.  Jim went to work for American Medical Supplies Company and was relocated multiple times.  Jim next worked for a contact lens company.  His final career was in the investment field, from which he retired in 2019.

Jim was brought into our club by Larry Valente in 1997.  Jim was club president 2004-05 and Membership Chair in 2014-15.  He was named Rotarian of the Year for 2018-19.  He is a past president of the Rancho Bernardo Community Foundation.  Jim currently serves on the board of Tender Loving Canines.

President Dave adjourned our meeting at 12:13 pm.
