We had only one guest today, but the Welcome Song was led by Joel Doss.

Alan Turner, Membership Committee Chair, said a recent 5340 virtual training session gave information on how to stimulate Club membership, including hybrid meetings, recognition of Rotary activities by the media, recruiting members from local activities such as neighborhood cleanup days, and advertising. He mentioned that our Club Website has been updated to show the causes we support.

Mike Fuqua announced a $3000 Grant had been awarded to Savvy Giving by Design. This charity helps create living space for children undergoing medical treatments.  The award was accepted by Susan Winterstein.

President Alex thanked todays’ volunteers: Scribe Rz Norris, Editor Bill Angus, and Jeanne Hawkins for the Zoom setup today.  He said there is now a Zoom “team” consisting of Jeanne, Alan Turner, Mike Fuqua and Dave Brooks.

President Alex asked Jeanne, from all her travels in her RV, what was her favorite place? She said “the Grand Tetons”. President Alex recounted his cross country trip to Florida and back in an RV.

Arilla St Laurent, wearing her witches’ hat, said she had not heard of any Family of Rotary issues other than a Memorial Service for Bill Angus’ mother this coming Saturday at St Bartholomew’s Church.

Fine Master, John O’Neill, was welcomed with cheerful boos from the membership.  He had no fines, but Doug Dawson fined himself $10 for a very early morning phone call to John.  Happy Bucks were welcomed by John.  Sonny Googins shared happy bucks in recognition that there were 41 members virtually connected today….a record.

Jan Goldsmith introduced our speaker today: Julie Meier Wright, who has served in government positions for the city of San Diego and the State of California.  She spoke of her efforts to turn around the State economy following the recession in the 1990’s, bringing new jobs and development into the State.  She also spoke of the benefit of problem solving “Red Teams” in government. She mentioned the creation of a new moderate political party in California.  Information is at cacommonsense.org.  Following questions and answers, Terry Heck made the book presentation.

Dan Barrios said he had a pin to award, but the recipient was not with us.  He said that our Club is now 100% in giving to the Rotary Foundation.

Jim Hyldahl said most of the new Club shirts were picked up last week. Members can buy additional shirts at he Club price until May 28th, when they will go back to regular price.  He also said that anyone wanting his smoked salmon for Memorial Day entertaining should let him know so he can process the salmon by then.
