Rotary Meeting Notes 3/5/2020
By Sandie Dewane

The meeting was called to order by Past President Don Glover and we recited the Rotary Four Way Test with him. Jim Sommer, on very short notice, did a fine job of leading us in the Pledge of Allegiance. Jim Hyldahl gave the Inspirational thought about the positive impact women have made to Rotary since 1988, when women were first allowed to join.

New member Resa Coopat was today’s greeter and welcomed two visiting Rotarians and three guests. Joel Doss led us in the welcome song. Don thanked the following volunteers: Sgt. At Arms – Bill Brehm; Front desk – Joel Doss, Russ Haskell and Ron Hunt; Scribe – Sandie Dewane; Photographer- James Kaspar; IT/Video – Alan Turner and Weekly Newsletter coordinator – Bill Angus.
Don mentioned that President David King is taking a leave of absence while he is finalizing some personal matters. Dave is committed to fulfilling his term and we look forward to his return. In the meantime, the following members will be helping to run the meetings: 3/12– Don Glover; 3/19-Doug Dawson; 3/26-Mike Fuqua and 4/2-Alex Robertson.
Jim Hyldahl has been chosen by the Board for the “Hats Off to Volunteers” award on 4/18 at RB High School. Jim has been the lead in coordinating the 7 Oaks and Oaks North clean-up days that the residents so appreciate. Congratulations Jim! The next 7 Oaks clean-up day is set for 5/16.
Don informed us that he was honored to be wearing a special shirt today, as it was one of a collection of Hawaiian shirts belonging to John Hawkins. Jeanne decided to share John’s numerous shirts with those who attended his Celebration of Life gathering. Very cool!

Russ Haskell announced that the top two winners from our 4 Way Speech Contest will be competing at additional Rotary competitions and invited anyone interested to attend with him. Phil Warner announced that the Vista Hill food delivery needs a shopper and vehicle on March 10 and March 30. Let Phil know if you can volunteer. Cathy Glover will be collecting orders for Sees Easter candy until the last Thursday of March. Doug Dawson gave a helpful report on what we need to do to avoid the coronavirus.

Don Glover had the pleasure of presenting a check from the Rancho Bernardo Rotary Club Foundation in the amount of $1,000 to Connie Etheridge from the Assistance League. This was a matching gift of a donation made by Benita Page. Arilla St. Laurent gave the Family of Rotary report and informed us that John Kasser is now home from rehab and Dave Brooks is having cochlear ear surgery today. John O’Neill is still consulting with medical professionals. Quickly changing hats, Arilla morphed into the Fine Master role. There was only time for happy bucks and many people contributed. Thanks to all!

Mira Bozanich introduced Joan Jones, Executive Director, of the San Diego Regional Fire Foundation, who gave an interesting presentation on what the agency does to help the San Diego County back country become better prepared to fight fires. She informed us that there are 250 fire stations in San Diego County and 191 weather stations that monitor temperature, humidity and wind levels. She also discussed the importance of having a Home Fire Escape Plan to follow in our own homes. Terry Heck presented a book to Joan for her signature which will be donated to the Bernardo Heights Middle School Library.

Our next meeting is in the evening on 3/12. The speaker is Bill Protzmann and the subject is “The Power of Music.” Don closed the meeting with his own inspirational thought: “Rotarians never quit. We never surrender. We never hide from history. We make history and we will continue to strive to abide by our motto, Service Above Self.”

Respectfully submitted,
