Rotary Meeting Notes – 3/18/21
Social Time Tidbits: Some members excused themselves to change into something green (Sonny Googins and President Alex). Arilla St. Laurent apologized for missing last week’s meeting as she fell asleep in her chair waiting for the meeting to start and slept right through it! Alan Turner reported that their daughter decided to “organize us”. They now have several new framed family photos throughout the house. Alan’s office is roomier since his daughter questioned why he was keeping so many unnecessary items and papers, which resulted in a garbage bin full of the discarded items! Bob Vaughn and Russ Haskell reported that they received their second COVID shots. Bob’s side effects were eased with a glass of wine, but Russ was down and out for about 12 hours.
The meeting was called to order by President Alex Robertson. Brian Flaherty led us in the Pledge of Allegiance and Tom Kapocius inspired us with several quotes. Greeter Dick Norfolk welcomed our guests, with a special welcome to the Rotaractors from SDSU. Joel Doss, baton in hand, sang the Welcome Song. President Alex thanked Mike Fuqua for Zoom set up; Sandie Dewane for filling in at the last minute as Scribe and Newsletter Publisher Bill Angus.
Mike Fuqua showed a short “People of Action” video from Scott Carr.
Mike reported that the Club Foundation presented $1,000 to Abraxas High School to support materials and plant food needed for its amazing garden. Bill Lutticken from Abraxas gave a brief history about the garden and showed the numerous vegetables and fruit the students nurture and grow. He said over 9,000 pounds of food has been donated to 230 families, two senior homes and a women’s shelter – amazing! He invited us to contact him if we would like a tour.
Arilla St. Laurent gave the Family of Rotary update. Bill Brehm is having surgery to repair some chemotherapy damage. Bill Angus’ mother is experiencing a slow recovery from open heart surgery. John O’Neill informed us that he had 3 MRIs ordered by his spinal doctor. His doctor said it was necessary to have surgery to clean out the arthritis, without it he will have difficulty moving. This will be John’s sixth spinal surgery.
On a happier note, it was time for John to morph into our Illustrious Fine Master. He started off by fining $10 to those NOT wearing green. Russ Haskell, Mike Fuqua, Tom Kapocius, Brian Flaherty, Ron Hunt and others gave Happy Bucks.
Michael Ortiz introduced Rotarian and polio survivor Bob Rogers. Bob’s presentation was on Polio Plus and the great strides Rotary and other groups have made throughout the world. He showed a video of his experience in India and shared his personal story of contracting polio when he was 5 years old. Dan Barrios invited us to join The Rotary Foundation’s Polio Plus Society for a donation of $100/year.
Past President Dave King updated the group on the next golf outings. Unfortunately, we could not hear Cathy Glover’s report on See’s candy as her audio wasn’t working.
The next Zoom meeting is on March 25th at 11:00 a.m. Meeting adjourned.
Respectfully submitted,
Sandie Dewane, Scribe
