July 30th Rotary Meeting notes

Our intrepid Scotsman, Alex Robertson, operating in the Age of Zoom, called the meeting to order and led us through reciting the Four Way Test. The Pledge was ably handled by Dan Barrios and the Inspirational Message from Michael Ortiz was centered on the positive influence shown by Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls.

Other volunteers who were recognized by President Alex included Mike Fuqua for managing Zoom, John O’Neill as Scribe and Bill Angus for creating our newsletter. Joel Doss, who was in fine voice, delivered the welcome song. Thankfully, the rest of the club members were muted. Athenea Luciano, who pointed out that most women’s problems start with men, provided humor. This factoid was news to me.

Alan Turner presented some back-to-school choices in Poway Unified. He then introduced his daughter, Christine Testa, who spoke about her job as a speech therapist for elementary students at Poway Unified.

Pat Chafee reported that many generous members donated more than $500 last week. Also, everyone was reminded to send in their dues if they had not already done so. It was reported that we have 150 Covid-19 masks left and that they can be donated to other organizations in need. Finemaster John O’Neill was treated to an avalanche of Happy Bucks, fines and lunch money donations totaling $714.

Gary Saks shared a letter from Kaitlyn Kostyzak, a former Miss Teen RB and a recipient of a scholarship from our club. She said her exposure to the many Miss Teen RB activities was an excellent experience and thanked us again for the scholarship.

Dave Brooks and Ed Knight narrated an outstanding presentation of their visit to Ecuador. Special guest Rotarian, Bill Stumbaugh, shared his thoughts on living in Ecuador. Bill was a San Diego Rotarian who moved to Ecuador and is now president of his club there.

The meeting was adjourned at 12:15pm.
