Rancho Bernardo Rotary Club

Scribe Notes

July 25, 2024

The Opening Bell

President Terry Heck led us in the Four-Way Test and the Pledge.

Meeting Volunteers

President Terry thanked the following volunteers who made our meeting run smoothly: Greeter, Terri Hunter; Scribe, Marty Judge; A/V, Dave Brooks; Front Desk, Pat Chaffee, Joel Doss; Sgt. At Arms, Joel Doss; Photographer, Bill Brehm; and Book Presenter, Jim Hyldahl.

Speakers Focus on Senior Living

Gary Saks introduced Jim Lange, Executive Director of the Ed Brown Active Adult Center, and Chris Kelly of the San Diego Senior Community Foundation.

Chris pointed out that while the 60-plus age group in San Diego County will more than double from 405,000 in 2000 to 950,000 in 2030,  support systems for seniors have fallen far behind.   Indeed, only three percent of the county’s resources are directed to senior programs.

There are 130,00 seniors in the county who live alone with little or no support systems.  And there is no county-wide program devoted to seniors who are homeless.  Of the senior centers in the county, 22 percent do not have full-time staff members.

Kim noted that the Ed Brown Center, which is a 501(c)(3), has been devoted to providing programs for seniors since 1989 ranging from line dancing and concerts to a spectrum of exercise programs.  The center recently began offering a take-home meal program for seven meals and snacks and 150 people immediately signed up.  It plans to offer a transportation program soon.

Recognizing Women Members

President Terry said that from time to time he would like to recognize the good works of women members.  The first person to be recognized is Diane Remick, who has knitted a number of sweaters, sometimes six or seven per week.

Rotary Magic Night

Instead of a speaker, our August 1 meeting will have breakout sessions where members can discuss one of the six focus areas of our club: Youth Services, Community Service/Military, Social/Field Trips, Mental Health, Membership, Peace-Building.

Field Trip to Ride Above Disability Therapeutic Riding Center

The organization will give our club members a tour beginning at 10 a.m. on Saturday.

Family of Rotary

Sandie reported that John O'Neill plans to return to Rotary next week after taking delivery of a custom-designed van.

Period of Reflection

President Terry concluded the meeting by asking us to pause and reflect on Independence Day and what it has come to mean to our citizenry.  He played a succession of pictures that symbolized American life.

The Closing Bell

President Terry struck the concluding bell at 1:30 p.m.

Respectfully submitted,
