Rotary Club of Rancho Bernardo
July 18, 2019 Meeting Notes by Sandie Dewane
The meeting was called to order by Co-President Susan King.  John Kasser led us in the Pledge of Allegiance and the Inspirational Message was given by Alex Robertson.  Alex also presented a banner from the Rotary Club of Monaco.  Greeter, Johanna Mullin introduced six guests.  Joel Doss, sans baton, led us in singing our Welcome Song.  The following volunteers were thanked:  Front Desk – Joel Doss, Pat Chaffee, Karen Stelman; Set Up – John Kasser; Photographer – James Kaspar; Meeting Organizer – John O’Neill; Scribe – Sandie Dewane.
Mike Fuqua reported on the success of our first-ever Vines & Vittles event with the RB Historical Society!  It was a lot of work; lessons were learned and we’re looking forward to next year.  The gross was $56,000; Net $22,000 with approximately $17,000 going to our Club (25% net to RBHS; 75% of net to Rotary).  Mike showed an excellent video of the event that is on the website and can be used to recruit sponsors for next year.
Co-President David King reported that the following matching grants have been approved:  Poway Symphony - $1,000; Interfaith - $1,150; Dictionaries - $1,500; Speaker Books - $350.  He thanked Troy Daum and Phil Warner for their work on this year’s budget.  In Vern Cook’s absence, David reminded us about the Summer Games event at the 4S Ranch Boys & Girls Club on July 19th.

Jim Hyldahl introduced his grandson and a classmate who are both on the Varsity Basketball Team at RB High School.  There are 50 players from all grade levels who participate, along with six coaches.  A golf tournament will be held at the Rancho Bernardo Inn Golf Course on Monday, September 9th to support the basketball program.  They are seeking players and sponsors.  Flyers explaining various levels were at each table.
RZ Norris and Diane Remick announced that the August TGIX will be A Day at the Races on Wednesday, August 21st at the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club.  The price is $20 and includes an entrance ticket, program and table reservation.  To confirm your reservation, please pay Diane or RZ as soon as possible.  Buffet, menu food and alcohol are available for purchase.  Flyers were distributed.
Ron Hunt reminded us about the 15th annual music camp rehearsal on July 24th from 10:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at Balboa Park.  It’s a wonderful opportunity to see young people from around the world coming together through their musical talents.   Ron was recognized and thanked by Rotary Foundation Chair Dan Barrios for his generous donations.
We had the pleasure of hearing Johanna Mullin’s “Who Am I” and with that, she turned in her red badge.  Congratulations, Johanna!  Arilla St. Laurent gave the Family of Rotary report and informed us that Ed Knight is recovering from a fall and Maureen Rouleau is now out of ICU, but still in the hospital.  Get well cards were circulated for both.

Arilla then auctioned off a beautiful bouquet of flowers donated by Branches at the Bernardo Winery.  RZ Norris was the lucky bidder.
Next up, Arilla again, filling in as Fine Master in John O’Neill’s absence.  She started off by fining a table of guys that couldn’t attract a female to sit with them and anyone who was not wearing their Rotary pins in addition to their badges.  She then asked for happy bucks and there were lots of happy people such as Mike Fuqua, Troy Daum, Jim Reid, Dave Brooks, Alex Robertson and Jim Hyldahl.  Thanks to all!
Pat Chaffee introduced today’s speaker.  Skyler King presented an entertaining program of illusions and magic, which had many of us wondering “how did he do that?”  Skyler also talked about the history of illusions and explained how they are accomplished.   Terry Heck presented a book for Skyler’s signature, which will be donated to the Bernardo Heights Middle School.
Upcoming events:
July 28 – Padres vs. Giants.   Don Glover announced that there are 3 tickets available.  There are 60 people signed up and a tailgate party is planned prior to the game.  He will follow up with an email to everyone regarding times, where to meet, etc.  Great job, Don!
Next week’s program will be presented by Jesse Case and the topic is Rotaract.
The meeting was adjourned by Co-President Susan King.
Respectfully submitted,
Sandie Dewane
