Rotary Meeting Notes by Sandie Dewane

1/30/2020

Vice-President Don Glover called the meeting to order and we began by reciting the Rotary 4 Way Test.  Charley Crew led us in the Pledge of Allegiance and Alex Robertson gave today’s inspirational message. Greeter Gary Saks welcomed 8 guests and led us in the Welcome Song.

Don thanked the following volunteers:  Bill Brehm, Sgt. At Arms; Front desk – Joel Doss, Felix Luciano, Phil Warner; Scribe – Sandie Dewane, Bill Angus – Newsletter and Photographer James Kaspar.  Shirley Napierala provided a chocolate cake in honor of January birthdays: Athenea Luciano and Benita Page who were serenaded with “Happy Birthday” led by Joel Doss.

VP Don mentioned that club president David King will be returning after he completes rehab from a recent fall.  Hurry back, Dave! Shirley Napierala reported that 13 members volunteered to deliver Valentine’s flowers for Branches Florist Shop located in the Bernardo Winery.  (Branches donates a bouquet of flowers for our Club’s monthly auction.) For each delivery made, Branches will donate $10 to our Club. Karen Stelman reminded us to contact her if we are planning to attend the memorial service for Frances Blair on 2/15.  Diane Remick collected a bunch of bags to be used in Vista Hill food deliveries and asked us to continue bringing our extra bags each week. Arilla read a letter from former Vice-President Susan King in which Susan thanked all of us for welcoming her with open arms and supporting her along the way.  She will be relocating to Arizona where she has family.

On behalf of the Rotary Foundation, Dan Barrios reminded us that our club’s participation has always been 100% and there are still some folks who haven’t yet donated a minimum of $100.  Dan said it will make him a very happy man if we all donate! He then recognized Doug Dawson and Russ Haskell with Paul Harris Fellow pins. Congratulations gentlemen!

Foundation President Don Glover had the pleasure of presenting a check to Judy Blackford of Gently Hugged, a wonderful organization that donates a large bag of baby items to newborns throughout the county.  Last year over 800 low income moms/babies were the recipients. Club members Benita Page, Bob Barr, Vern Cook, Jim Sommer, David and Susan King made the initial donations, which were matched by the Club Foundation.

Arilla St. Laurent reported on the Family of Rotary.  John O’Neill is making some improvement, John Kasser is feeling better and Doug Dawson was walking without support and was at today’s meeting.  Good news on all counts! She then switched into Finemaster mode very quickly and Shirley and Benita were fined for having their pictures in the paper; Charley Crew was fined because he mentioned that he recently visited China – it was actually India; and Doug Dawson for wearing “half shorts” to accommodate the large brace he was wearing   Happy Bucks were given by Athenea and Felix Luciano; Mike Fuqua, Karen Stelman, Don Glover and Dan Barrios.

Incoming President Alex Robertson had good news to report in that three new Rotary clubs have recently been formed in San Diego County:  Mission Gorge, San Diego Downtown Evening and a Satellite Club in the Oceanside/Carlsbad area.

Pat Chafee introduced today’s speaker, Dr. Mitsuo Tomita, from the San Diego Hemlock Society.  Dr. Tomika shared with us the importance of having Advance Directives so that our wishes are carried out at end of life.  Very interesting topic and many of our members asked questions. Terry Heck presented a book for Dr. Tomita’s signature, which will be donated to the Bernardo Heights Middle School in his name.

Rick Bramble entertained us with a “Joe Max Moment” that we all enjoyed.

Next week’s meeting is at noon and the guest speaker is Veronica Musa who is a visiting scholar at USC Joan B. Kroc School of Peace Studies.  Our evening meeting on February 13th is a Valentine Celebration featuring entertainment by the Cogs Rotary band.

The meeting was adjourned.

Respectfully submitted,

Sandie Dewane, Scribe
