Rotary meeting notes January 26, 2023

Scribe notes by Sandie Dewane

President Alan Turner called the meeting to order and we recited the 4-Way Test and Pledge of Allegiance with him.  Greeter Emily Paup welcomed 4 Visiting Rotarians and 4 Guests.  Joel Doss led us in singing our Welcome Song.

Cathy Glover requested that the Dictionary Captains notify her if they still have books to be distributed to the schools.   She also mentioned that the next Sees Candy sales will take place in Spring.

Family of Rotary:  Arilla St. Laurent and Jim Sommer sadly informed us that Ron Hunt’s beloved wife, Joyce, passed away earlier this week.  Arilla reported that Dan Malloy and Dan Barrios are recovering from back surgery; John O’Neill is finally home from the hospital and Benita is here today and doing well.  As Fine Mistress, she then fined a few people for getting their pictures in the paper and she received Happy Bucks from several others.

Two new members were inducted into the Club today:  Scott Butler, sponsored by Joel Doss, and Barbara Noerenberg who is transferring from the Downtown Rotary Club.  Welcome Scott and Barbara!  The Rotary Foundation Chair, Bob Vaughn, had the pleasure of presenting a Paul Harris pin to Lee Proimas.  Congratulations Lee!

Charley Crew, stepping in for Club Foundation President Athenea Luciano, made a check presentation to San Diego Youth Services in the amount of $2,900!  This was a matching gift award initiated by Terry Heck.

Mike Fuqua asked us to indicate our volunteer preferences for Vines & Vittles on the Sign-up Sheet circulating from table to table.

Mike then introduced Michael Arms, President of the Helen Woodward Animal Center.  Mr. Arms  gave a riveting presentation about the mistreatment and disregard for the lives of innocent animals at many animal shelters and what he is doing to educate shelter staff and volunteers worldwide to protect the animals and find homes for them.  He describes himself as a businessman with a heart.  The Helen Woodward Animal Center does not euthanize any animals, including the animals it takes in from other shelters.  He developed a targeted marketing plan that creates visibility and awareness of the kittens, puppies, cats and dogs available for adoption.  Michael also invited our club members to come for a behind the scenes tour of the Helen Woodward Animal Center.

Calls to Action reminder from President Alan:  Volunteer for Vines & Vittles.

Next meeting is an evening meeting on February 2nd.  Councilmember Marni Von Wilpert is the speaker.
