ROTARY CLUB OF RANCHO BERNARDO

January 23, 2020

The meeting was called to order by Vice-President Don Glover, who led the membership in reciting the Four Way Test. The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Dan Malloy.  Cathy Glover gave the Inspirational message, recounting memorable “you could hear a pin drop” quotes from past US Presidents and military leaders.

Mike Stelman was the greeter today.  He introduced visiting Rotarians and other guests. Joel Doss led the Welcome Song.

Vice-President Don thanked the volunteers for today: acting Sgt. Of Arms Bill Brehm, Front desk Joel Doss, Arilla St. Laurent and Alan Turner, Scribe Rz Norris, Photographer James Kaspar. He also thanked Bill Angus, who was not present, for his great work at putting out the Club news letter online each week.

As John Kasser is unable to attend meetings following surgery, The Board of Directors has nominated Bill Brehm to be Sgt. Of Arms for the club.  The motion was made, and Bill was approved unanimously by the Club members.

Vice-President Don announced that Co-President Susan King has resigned, and that Co-President David King will continue as Club President.

Other announcements:

*Cathy Glover said that this was the last day (1/23) to sign up for the See’s Candy drive.

*Alan Turner reminded us that February is the annual food drive for Interfaith Services, and to save canned goods and non-perishables for the container to be set out at meetings during the month.

*Shirley Napierala reminded us to bring grocery bags for the Food Bank distribution. Container will be available at Club meetings.

*Arilla St. Laurent said that Branches Floral, who donates an arrangement to the Club each month to be auctioned off, is looking for people to deliver flowers on Valentines Day. She will donate $10.00 to the Club for each arrangement delivered.

*Mike Fuqua noted that new fliers and save-the-date cards for Vines and Vittles are available.

*Sandie Dewane encouraged members to suggest possible sponsors and venders for the Vines and Vittles activity happening on July 26th.

*Karen Stelman announced that the memorial for Frances Blair is scheduled for February 15, 2020, at St Bartholomew's Episcopal Church. Ernie is requesting that those who plan to attend RSVP to Karen so that reception plans can be made.  karenloan@aol.com

*Roy Cornette said that the Boy’s and Girl’s Club in 4S Ranch is looking for volunteers to help with sports activities on Saturdays. Contact him if interested.

*Vice President Don, speaking for Alex Robertson, thanked those members who acted as greeters for the International Rotary Assembly earlier this month.

Vice President Don, President of the Club Rotary Foundation, made a presentation of checks from the Matching Funds drive to John Piccalo, director of the Poway Symphony orchestra ($4,700.00), and to Michael Renne, of Poway On Stage ($1,00.00), for a total of $5,700.00 to that organization.

Arilla St. Laurent, for Family of Rotary, welcomed Doug Dawson (and his knee scooter), back to our meetings following his surgery. She thanked Karen for being her information gatherer.  Get well cards were circulated for John Kasser and John O’Neill. Arilla changed hats and took her spot as Fine Mistress until John O’Neill returns.

Mira Bozanich introduced Barbara Khozam, the speaker for today.  Her topic was “Zap Negativity and Ignite Your life”. It was an entertaining and informative presentation.  Terry Heck presented the speakers book, “Energy”.

The next meeting is January 30th, with guest speaker Faye Girsh from the Hemlock Society, speaking on Advance Directives.

Vice President Don thanked today’s guests and speaker, and closed the meeting with this thought from Steve Jobs: “Sometimes life hits you in the head with a brick---Don’t lose Faith”.
