ROTARY CLUB OF RANCHO BERNARDO

January 13, 2022,  Hybrid meeting

Co-President, Athenea, opened this hybrid meeting and welcomed members of both the in-person and ZOOM membership, then led members in reciting the Four-Way Test.  Alan Turner was busy at the electronic board managing the mixing of the meeting. The Pledge was led by Barb Alberts.  Jan Goldsmith gave the Inspirational message, reading from his newspaper article on Martin Luther King and segregation.

Greeter today, Joanna Mullins, acknowledged both in house and ZOOM guests.  Joel Doss led Welcome Song.  Following that, Jim Sommer led us in singing God Bless America.

Doug Dawson announced that 2 additional Nursing Students in our Club Juarez project have graduated, which makes a total of 38 graduates out of the 45 students.  Jim Hyldahl said the Club Service Committee project at The RB Swim and Tennis Club has been canceled due to access complications, but he is talking with Westwood Swim and Tennis Club about scheduling with them in May.

Family of Rotary: Arilla St Laurant said Ken Heinz is recovering from back surgery. Don Glover said Dick Norfolk’s wife is in the hospital. Arilla’s daughter is recovering from surgery.

Finemaster, John O’Neill, received a robust welcome of “boos”. There were a few fines, and lots of Happy Bucks, several thanking Alan for his work making the combination meeting with ZOOM work.  Dave Brooks, on ZOOM, gave $100 to help defray the cost of meals for those attending virtually.

The scheduled speaker for today, Rose Schindler, a 93 year old Holocaust survivor, was thoughtfully replaced by Club Members, Jim Hyldahl and Mike Stelman.

Jim did a “Who Am I” talk. He talked about his youth in the farm country of Illinois through his years of education.  He came recognize the importance of an education, and began his career with American Hospital Supply Corporation.  While in college he met and married Joanne.  He spent 17 years with the company, then was recruited by a new company in San Diego, Continuous Curve, but in the early ‘80’s made a career change to investing with Dean Witter.  In 1997, Rotary member Larry Valente invited him to lunch at a Rotary meeting, and Rotary became his “second family”.  He was president of our Club in 2005-2006. In conclusion, he reminded us that we are all “salesmen”; selling ourselves and ideas to others, that it is important to “envision” your life every day the rest of your life, and concentrate on only three variables at a time so you don’t overload your system.

Mike Stelman gave us a history of the Flag Court at the Padres BallPark.  During Mike's first year as District Governor Nominee, it was the Rotary Centennial.  Mike was asked to spearhead a District project to mark the Centennial. He visited many Clubs around the District looking for ideas before deciding to create a Flag Court for the new Padres BallPark, yet to be constructed.  With the District behind the idea, and with the help of Jack Raymond, he formulated the plan to present to Padres Management.  He showed a video of the 2005 dedication of the Flag Court by Past President of Rotary International, Cliff Dochterman, with its 23 flags.  Members of our Club sponsored 2 flag poles in the court, and the Rotary Wheel is displayed on the main pole.

Gary Saks thanked Jim and Mike for stepping up to fill in for the speaker today.

Our speaker next week will be Kristin Baranski, Santee School District Superintendent.

Meeting was adjourned.
