8 February 2024

Today’s volunteers were Joe Gandelman (greeter), Paul Courtright (scribe), Dave Brooks (AV), Pat Chaffee, Joesl Doss, and Mark Alberts (front desk), Joel Doss and Bob Vaughan (Sgt at Arms) and Bill Brehm (photographer).

President Jim Reid noted that there is no new information on the memorial for Larry Valente.

Terry Heck, the in-coming President, recently completed the President Elect Training (PETS) and is preparing to take on his new role mid-year.

Paul Courtright gave a brief presentation on the Rotary-Peace Corps partnership (Partnering for Peace) and is ready to answer any questions Rotarians may have regarding potential projects.  The RB Sunrise Club is also interested in joining the initiative.

President Jim Reid noted that there will be a District Training Assembly on May 9 at Liberty Station.  The event is free for all, and a valuable learning experience about district activities.

The Model UN conference will be held on March 23-24 at Del Mar City Hall.

On April 16 (Tuesday evening) there will be a joint RB and Sunrise Rotary meeting and dinner.

Jim Hyldahl reminded members of the Seven Oaks Association clean-up, scheduled for April 20.  He also informed the club about the San Diego Volunteer Organization Active in Disaster Relief, a local organization supporting a variety of efforts.  They are seeing people to be part of a call-bank programme.  Contact Jim for more details.

James Morrison, District 5340 Coordinator for the Paul Harris Society (PHS) noted that there are 30,000 PHS members worldwide, about half of whom are in the US.  The RB Rotary has quite a few PHS members and $857,000 has been donated by the club to the Rotary Foundation.  Russ Haskell and Dave Brooks were provided certificates acknowledging them at PHS fellows.

District Governor Don Fipps awarded the RB Rotary a certificate of appreciation for the $4,770 raised for End Polio.

After a Rotary rendition of “Home on the Range” Sandie Dewane informed the club that Sonny Googins and Don Glover are recuperating and looking forward to joining meetings.  Bob Vaughn was Mr. Happy Bucks.

The speaker was Sharlene O’Keefe, the Executive Director of Poway Onstage.  She informed the club of activities including both performances and educational endeavors.  Poway Onstage reaches out to schools providing a variety of arts programs.  After a brief Q&A Cheryl did a book presentation on behalf of the club.

The meeting ended at 1330.
