Lee Proimos warmly greeted Rotarians and Guests today.

Sgt. At Arms: Joel Doss

Our greeter, Lee Proimos, introduced visiting Rotarians and guests representing the Model UN Conference, the Spirit of the 4th Committee, Ale Smith & the Anvil of Hope Foundation, and Beverly Judge. Joel Doss then led Rotarians in our traditional welcome song.

President Jim announced several important upcoming dates:

February 29th will be a special evening meeting hosting the Rotary Youth Instrumental Music Contest with 5 students competing for cash awards. There will be a flute, a trombone, a euphonium and two clarinets in the competition.

March 9th will be the District Training Assembly at Liberty Station - just register online.

March 23-24th is the Model UN Conference at Del Mar City Hall.

April 19th is a Tuesday evening joint meeting with Sunrise. Mark your calendars, please!

RB Rotary Foundation President Athenea introduced our grantees this month and thanked Rotarians for their generosity in supporting these important nonprofits:

Accepting a $2,500 foundation check for the Spirit of the 4th were Rotarians Dave Brooks and Resa Coopat with three committee member guests.

Accepting a $2,000 foundation check for Anvil of Hope was founder Vicky Zein of Alesmith Brewing Co. joined by Rotarian Terry Heck.

Our talented and enthusiastic R-O-T-A-R-Y serenaders were our musical interlude this month.

President Jim gave our Family of Rotary report this week and was followed by Bob Vaughn collecting “Happy Bucks” from many happy Rotarians!

Program Chair Jim Hyldahl introduced our speaker, fellow Rotarian Marty Judge, who spent 20 years in Washington, most of it with the U.S. Department of State, making him extremely qualified to present an insider’s view of “Diplomacy and the State Department.” The presentation was both insightful and informative, touching on the Department’s history and key decisions that changed the course of today’s world. An engaging Q & A followed. Many thanks to Cheryl Roop for presenting Marty with an excellent book to sign!

The meeting concluded with a reminder of next week’s evening meeting and the Rotary District Music Contest for local high school students.

President Jim closed the meeting and rang the bell at 1:30pm.

Respectfully submitted,
