President Dave called the meeting to order and we recited the Four Way Test which kicked off our program as this was the speech contest where each student gave their interpretation of what it meant to them. Rick Bramble led us in the Pledge and Dick Norfolk gave the Inspirational Message. Dick added an interesting moment in his life which was living in Denzel Washingtons neighborhood and what a nice man he is! Our greeter was Tom Kapocious who introduced guests and visiting Rotarians. Joel Doss, Pat Chaffee and Diane Remick were at the front desk, Bill Brehm did the set up, James Kaspar was our photographer and John O'Neill is our meeting organizer.

Our meeting agenda was reorganized to accommodate the speakers and announcements were inserted between presenters. Russ Haskell was our Chairman and explained the process and guidelines for the Four Way Test. They were given 5 to 7 minutes to deliver their messages. We usually have a clear winner and judges had an easier time then they did this time! All four speakers were equally great and in some cases, with 250 + or - points to award, two were 1 point apart and the others not far behind! It was so impressive. None of them used notes and remembered all their lines.

SPEAKER A - 2nd PLACE WINNER - (Skyler Wu from Del Norte HS) His topic was how he had a slow start in school due to the fact that he didn't speak English for several years. He ended up making origamies as he sat alone at lunch. Pretty soon he started making friends and to this day, some of his friends still have those creations! By the Way, he spoke perfect English!

SPEAKER B AND C were HONORABLE MENTION
Tejas Balaji - Del Norte High
Khushi Patel - RB High

SPEAKER D - FIRST PLACE! - ( Toshko (Todor) Andreev - RB High) Todor and his family are from Bulgaria and he told us how he started up a Robotics Club there with help from Politicians, Teachers and others from that area. A very accomplished young man. Can't wait to see where he goes from here.
The two top winners will advance to the Sub Regional competition in March. We wish them good luck.
ANNOUNCEMENTS

Alex Robertson attended PETS (President Elect Training Seminar) for the 6th time, half as an instructor and half as an incoming president! His message was interesting and important. "Rotary opens up opportunities." We welcome him as our next President this summer!

Mike Stelman updated us on our involvement with MCAS Miramar. Our fund raising allows us to provide "Peace and Comfort bags" that are given to returning Marines from overseas that contain toiletry items and snacks to enjoy immediately upon their return. We also provide a beautiful engraved sword to the NCO Corporal who is tops in his graduating class. Earnie Giles, Frances Blairs husband, was kind enough to donate this months sword in her honor. Funds used to buy the swords were brought over from the Miramar Semper Fidelis Rotary Club upon their closure while individual donors may choose to donate a sword as well.
Cathy Glover gave us an update on the Sees Candy sales. We have made $3394.89 after 2 1/2 years of sales. Thanks Cathy for all you efforts. The extra pounds are worth it!!
Anyone interested in Winter Dance tickets, please see RZ.

Today we inducted another new member, Resa Kopat, whose classification is Accounting Management. Her mentor is John Mullin who will assist her in fulfilling her requirements for her permanent gold badge. Alan Turner from the Membership Committee presented her with her temporary Red Badge. She was asked to greet our members as we left the room. She will be a wonderful addition to our club!
John Kasser is currently experiencing some health challenges. Please feel free to send a card of well wishes and keep Carol and him in your prayers.

Some of our club members volunteered to deliver flowers on Valentines Day for Branches Florist at the Bernardo Winery. They offered to pay $10 to our club for every delivery. We racked up a whopping $350! That wasn't all. They also donated a beautiful huge bouquet of flowers to be auctioned off. Alex was the ultimate winner with his bid of $100! Thanks to all.

Yours in Rotary,
Karen Stelman, Scribe
