"It's with a broken heart that I say goodbye to my life partner and soulmate. John passed away yesterday after a long, ferocious and very private battle with cancer. We will miss him so much, but his music and memory will live in our hearts forever. Services pending." - Jeanne

Rotary Family,

It's with great sadness that I inform you that John Hawkins passed away yesterday February 15 after his battle with cancer.

Let's keep John and Jeanne/family in our thoughts and prayers.

No further arrangements have been made as far as I know.

Sad news.

Sincerely,
Dave King

A Celebration of Life was held on February 15 at the parish of St. Bartholomew, the Episcopal Church in Poway, where Frances and her husband Earnie attended for a number of years.  Along with her family and friends, the family of Rotary in Rancho Bernardo will deeply miss her and the many contributions she made over the years.  In 2013-2014 our club named her Rotarian of the Year.
Rest In Peace Frances!

RANCHO BERNARDO ROTARY CLUB
February 13, 2020
The Rotary band “COGS”, provided lively music to entertain the club members and guests during the social time and for our Valentines Dinner.

The meeting was called to order by Vice President Don Glover when the band took their dinner break. The Rotary Four Way Test was led by VP Don. The Pledge was led by Aubrey Paris.  She spoke of a comparison of Valentine love and Patriotic love of country. Johanna Mullin gave the inspirational message with a history of Valentine’s Day. The beginning of the celebration as we know it today is credited to Hallmark Cards.

The greeter today was Bob Vaughn. Visiting Rotarians, wives, guests and members of the COGS band were introduced. With baton in hand, Joe Doss led members in a rousing rendition of the Club welcome song.

Vice President Don thanked the Club members volunteering this evening:  Jim Reid did the set-up, Joel Doss, Terry Heck and Athenea Luciano were at the front desk, Rz Norris was scribe and provided table decorations and candy. James Kaspar, our photographer, was on deck as always, and Bill Angus continues to provide the email minutes online.

Mike Fuqua said the Vines and Vittles project is getting organized with sponsors and venders all ready committing to the July 26th happening. Last year was a learning exercise, this year we know what to do. He said that this event netted $17,000 in ’19, and he is shooting for $40,000 this year. The V and V website is being upgraded.

Shirley Napierala thanked all the members who volunteered to deliver Valentine’s flowers for Branches Floral on Friday.  Also mentioned was “Operation Thin Mint”, organized by the Girl Scouts, to help provide funds to the military by selling their cookies. Donations will be made from the purchase of the cookies.

Ernie Blair said the Memorial for Frances will be Saturday, February 15, 2020, 10:00am, at St. Bartholomew Church in Poway. He is happy to be in San Diego and to visit the Club. Alex Robertson will be attending a training session in Los Angeles.

Dave Davis, spokesman for the “Cogs” band mentioned how far the band has come since it’s beginning.  The members represent several Rotary Clubs in this area, and have raised $7,500 for the Foundation since beginning.  He showed us a special trophy the Band will present to our member, John Hawkins, who currently is in Hospice. The trophy is of a piano with a Rotary wheel. John was pianist for the band for many years.

Kathy Glover and Deborah Goodrich passed out slips of paper to all, each with question on it, and said that some members will be asked to answer the question. One person from each table offered an amusing answer to the “Valentine’s oriented” questions received.

Arilla St. Laurant, said that John Kasser had recently had surgery and was doing well. Also, John O’Neill was doing better.  Changing her hat to “Esteemed Happy Buck Mistress”, Arilla declined to give fines tonight, but happily received many Happy Bucks from the members.

Before the “Cogs” presented another set of music, Vice President Don reminded us that next weeks meeting, February 20th, would be the Four Test Way Contest.  His Valentine Inspirational Thought: “We do not exist for ourselves alone, and it is only when we are fully convinced of this fact that we begin to love ourselves properly and thus also love others”. Thomas Merton.

The Cogs band played during the post meeting social time.
