
Meeting Minutes
December 9, 2021
Co-president Alex Robertson ran the meeting solo today as Co-president Athenea Luciano was returning from a trip to celebrate her daughter’s 21st birthday. Alex brought our meeting to order at 12:30 pm and led us in reciting the 4 Way Test. Assisting him was President-nominee Jim Reid.
The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Bill Brehm and Vern Cook inspired us with some thoughts about those who died at Pearl Harbor and reminded us of our wonderful centenarian past member Joe Max.
Greeter Mira Bozanich introduced a bunch of visitors including Tom Lettington who is a part of the Spirit of the Fourth committee and a member of the RB Community Council.
Tom has been one of our speakers in the past; his subject was climate change.
Joel Doss lead us in singing Christmas carols…….ooopps no it was our welcome song.
Alex inducted three new members: Barb and Mark Albers and Ken Heinz. Ken has been a Rotarian for many years and is transferring to our club from the San Diego North club which has dissolved.
Rotary Foundation Chair Bob Vaughn recognized Connie Alvarez as a Paul Harris Fellow.
Through our club foundation, Bob initiated a $1000 matching gift to Doors of Change. Here he presents the check to president and founder Jeffery Sitcov.
Mike Fuqua showed us a PowerPoint describing the Tecate House build he participated in on December 4th. He said he is a big fan of the nail gun. Other members attending were Don Glover, Pat Chaffee, Dave King and Terry Heck.
Alex thanked our volunteers: Bill Angus for posting the newsletter; Bob Vaughn and Bill Brehm for room setup; Joel, Doug Dawson and Pat for staffing the front desk; photograghy by James Kaspar (augmented by Bill Brehm) and your humble scribe, Dave Brooks.
Cathy Glover said we got a duplicate shipment from See’s Candy, and they did not want it returned. So she had some extra candy to sell and said that we will have $1000 for our scholarship program.
Arilla St. Laurent updated us on the Family of Rotary; Lyman Clark has passed away. He was in RB Rotary from 1983 to 2003 and owned a stationary store in RB. She then put on her fine mistress hat. Everyone not wearing their Rotary pin was fined five bucks.
Mike Stelman introduced our speaker, Matt Iske. Matt is a teacher at Abraxas Continuation High School and has founded the Your Truth Foundation. This 501c3 foundation provides education, resources and support to youth and at-risk populations.
As a speaker’s gift, Mike presented Matt with a book titled Wild Boy.
Alex reminded us that our December 16th meeting will be an evening social event at Koi-Zen wine cellar. It will start at 5 pm.
President Alex adjourned the meeting at 1:30 pm.
