Dec. 3, 2020 RB Rotary Club Zoom Meeting
President Alex opened the meeting at 11 a.m. and introduced our newest member, Jan Goldsmith, to lead us in the pledge. Gary Saks was our Virtual Greeter and Joel Doss led us in the Welcome Song.
There was a Special Foundation Presentation Introduced by Jim Reid to The Poway Symphony.
Thanks to our volunteers: Mike Fuqua for setting up the Zoom meetings and is Rotarian of the Month! Bill Angus is our Newsletter producer each month and Karen Stelman is scribe.
Then President Alex shared a Special Presentation regarding the District Awards we earned. Unfortunately they were sent to the Sunrise Rotary Club and they were all excited (for a short time), until they got a call from Alex saying there was a mistake made. We had theirs and they had ours!
Our envelope was much bigger than theirs of which all the club members were very happy and proud of our club.
Announcements:
Mike Stelman spearheaded the poinsettia sale and distribution that was done this past Sat. at Bernardo Heights and the Stelman Residence. There were 156 boxes sold and it was a record year for Mike and our club! Next week he'll announce the amount we made from this fund raiser after expenses. We can all be proud that so much was raised for our Marines at Miramar. They are all so deserving!

Dan Barrios reported that our average giving for the club was $244 per capita per Rotarian. He also awarded Doug Dawson a new Paul Harris pin representing his $5,000 donation to the Foundation which had blue sapphires and another one to Russ Haskell with rubies for his $9,000 donation. He also reported that our club, true to form, raised $7,065 for Polio Plus which was then matched by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation 2 for 1 bringing our total contribution to $21,195!!
There were no Family of Rotary reports but Arilla let us know that there is a need for pajamas in the 5 to 10 year old category for young children in need. They are in foster homes and in most cases have been taken away from their parents and need our support. You can call Arilla or have your purchase sent to her home for delivery to the proper sources. The deadline is Dec. 15th.
Dave Brooks was our big contributor at $125 this past month! And finally, John O'Neill had a harrowing story to share. He was in a serious accident on Hwy. 8 where a car went out of control and drifted into him, totaling his beautiful Audi but spared him. He was not hurt, amazingly enough, but it was sure a bad situation. So glad you're still with us John, you tough old bird!!
John Goodrich introduced our speaker of the day. Her name is Jamie Beck, Assistant District Attorney in San Diego. Her topic was Survivors of Human Trafficking from 2017. Her office offers free legal services to the survivors. Her topics were Exploitation for sex or labor, Organ trafficking, and Legal needs of survivors. Her major focus was on Family and Child Welfare, breaking down barriers, and to provide legal clinics and services, all free to help the children thrive through this difficult transition.
She can be reached at her web site: http://USD Human Traffic Study.
This is a huge problem in Southern CA and she has been able to get the funding to continue to do her work with the support of the City of San Diego.
Our next meeting date is Dec. 10th at 5:30. Our speakers will be Dr. Madanat and Dr. Frazee of SDSU. Birthdays will be celebrated at the Dec. 17th meeting.
Have a safe and healthy Dec.
